So it's been raining a lot today and I noticed the ceiling of my room is leaking. Worse yet, I fear the water may be dripping through the ceiling light fixture. My house was built in the 30s and I think the electrical work is just as old. I'm worried the leak is going to start an electrical fire. I bought a can of Flex Seal to spray the roof with tomorrow but in the meantime I put a bucket on the roof to catch the rain water (it's actually still raining right now). What should I do? I don't want to pay an electrician this close to Christmas.

I don't have a rubber suit? I have a poncho but thankfully the leak is not over my bed.

The wiring mostly but there was water slowly dripping off the ceiling light bulb, so I know the water is near/on the wiring. Needless to say I haven't turned the light on since.

Yeah, when it stops get an electrician up there. Houses in the 30's weren't built to modern code. Be prepared, it is going to cost a lot of money.

If you can get into the attic, can you take a picture of the wiring and post it?

This is unlikely, if the water contacts both terminals it would be a short. In other words, your breaker will trip or your fuse will blow. A fire is unlikely. XboxLegendary posted...

This may or may not help. Water is a bitch. It will find a way and it will follow any way it can. Shingles overlap to keep water on top. It's possible to have a leak higher up the roof than where you think it's coming in. As @Ray_Dorset said, pictures of attic under your roof would be helpful. But don't worry yet about a fire. If your house is that old I have worse news for you I'm afraid as far as wiring and an electrician call goes

There's no attic up there, at least not an accessible one.

Hmmm, ok well I'll still say your house won't burn down because of a leak. However, just because it's leaking through your light doesn't mean the leak is above your light. The water could be just following down the wires like it does with anything else you've seen water follow. You need to get access to the underside of your roof. Look for discoloring and obviously wet patches.

As far as your wiring, if you can send me a pic via here or PM I could tell you what kind of ouch you're gonna have when you do call an electrician someday. Spoiler alert: I'm pretty sure you don't want the answer.

The wires are corroded and have what appears to be insulators made of fabric.

That's the old cloth coated stuff before they came out with modern romex. Not the best stuff to have in your home to be honest. The best option for you is probably going to be having an electrician come to your home to get hands on with it and give you first hand advice. I know you mentioned there's no attic access and it's common for older houses in my area to not have a staircase or pulldown, but homes like that usually have at least a small access point in a closet or something. Can you check around for that?

Call your insurance. You will probably need a new roof.
