Finally finished.

I mean I can see how the weapon breaking system in BOTW can get annoying, but it doesn't ruin the game (although BOTW is definitely overrated by critics).

This guy honestly makes RDR2 seem like a terrible game. Like not even worth your time. And often it's not even because of the game itself, it's because of MANY stupid choices in direction

He's so right about the constant random switch from a realistic open world to an unrealistic linear scripted game being terrible for the gamer.

He actually praises BOTW >_>

He doesn't talk about the weapon system at all though, just about its open world.

if you're looking for someone who's more knowledgeable about game design and mechanics, here's mark brown's take on a lot of similar subjects to the ones in the video. actually a lot of jakey's points are almost verbatim what mark says. hmmmmm

https://www.patreon.com/posts/22570692

notable

Like most Rockstar games, these missions are extremely restrictive in what youre allowed to do. The game constantly tells you what to do, with a pop up command at the bottom of the screen, and if you dont follow this script to the letter youll be hit with a Failed screen.

Ive failed missions for trying to flank around the bad guys - thats counted as leaving my crew behind. Ive failed for trying to take enemies out using stealth, instead of loud gunfire. Ive failed for trying to solve problems in creative ways. Ive failed because I broke the law - never mind that Im playing as an outlaw, and the game has a whole police response system built in.

The missions can also remove mechanics arbitrarily. In one, I wasnt allowed to take my gun off my horse. In another, I wasnt allowed to whistle for my horse so I had to chase on foot. And the bandit mask system works randomly during missions - most of the time youll still get a huge price on your head and have to use most of your earnings from that mission to pay off your bounty.

Unfortunately, most of the missions are also simply quite dull. Theres so much riding towards waypoints. Waiting for characters to do stuff. Listening to people go on and on. Bad insta-fail stealth missions. Endless cover-based shootouts that feel like theyre from the previous generation. Following characters as they walk slowly through the woods.

There are some standouts here and there, which I wont spoil. And the musical choices frequently elevate things. But most are completely forgettable. And in a world of games like The Witcher 3, where almost every quest is memorable, thats a disappointment.

Rockstar has always been quite restrictive in ways you can approach their mission objectives, seems like RDR2 is no exception. and that's a real shame coming hot off the heels of some real gems in recent years, like MGSV, BotW, and Witcher 3

tbh, I don't mind Rockstar's approach, where missions are more cinematic, and the side content is more freeform.

they want to tell their story in a specific way while allowing players to do what they want outside of that.

I can see how people might not like that dichotomy, but I appreciate it.

that was the only part of his video that I watched, but not because I don't feel his arguments don't have merit, but because I don't like watching longer YouTube videos.

I assume that the next part was about the bounty system, which could be annoying.

I didn't make it through the whole thing but he doesn't even have his facts right. The law system in RDR2 is not the same as GTAV. RDR2 police don't automatically know where you are out in the field or magically know when you kill someone. It has witness/inspecting/diffuse/etc. aspects. This is obvious stuff so what is he on about.

I think the issue is when as a player you have scenarios where you can think up your own tactics that don't contradict or ruin the story but you're just outright not allowed.

In a sense the game is more designed like you're an actor who has to go through the right scenes in the right order. You are not encouraged to experiment and you don't have any real agency over your actions. The shoot out in Valentine is a prime example. I didn't follow Dutch out the door so I failed. There's a lot of stuff like that.

The mission where you steal the oil carriage is one of the sole exceptions. So they can do it.

that's what I mean in R* wanting to tell their stories in their own way. I think that the actor analogy is apt - in story missions, things are deliberately structured, they want their set pieces, and so on.

I think that the guy in the video said something about how the story is like Uncharted, while the side-content is like Breath of the Wild, or something like that.

a compromise would be cool, but the way things are are cool, too, for me.

Ok I'll take your word for it but in one part he also explicitly complains that the law system is basically the same as GTAV as a way to say they haven't advanced that area.

The complaint that set piece storyline missions are too restrictive is so baffling to me.

Imagine if people made this complaint about Uncharted or something.

On top of that, this is actually the logical progression of their design. People seem to forget that the only reason GTA III and Vice City offered so much "freedom" is because everything was bare bones and janky as fuck.

Nobody understands just how fucking hard it is to program the things they are talking about, which is why I always laugh at these kids and journalists who have no actual experience with design or coding going on and on about what game makers should do.
