It's not quite that easy, though.

When I graduated from college, I moved to an entire new city where I didn't know anybody. To this day, I've only made a few friends that I'd consider actual legit friends even though I work 2 jobs and am very sociable and people seem to like me and like talking to me.

I invite people to come with me and go watch local entertainment, to watch sports, to go to the bar, to play video games, etc...but sadly it seems like most people who are my age are locked into their normal routines and social circles. Sure, maybe somebody comes and hangs out once in awhile, but usually just once and never again. And I don't blame them...why spend time trying to develop a relationship with a new friend when you can have that instant gratification with your already established friends? It would be much easier if already-established social circles would just start inviting me along to the shit they do, but nobody ever seems to want to do that.

Maybe it's me, but I don't see what is so off-putting about me. I'm healthy, I work out, I look reasonably good, I dress nice, I speak well, I make people laugh, I have interesting hobbies, I have a solid career, I'm educated, I can have thoughtful discussions about anything, and overall I'm a pretty nice person. I'm the same race as most of the people I interact with as well, so it's definitely not a racial thing. And I'm straight, so it ain't a homophobic thing either.

And then there's women. Shit, I'll be at the bar by myself drinking a beer, and then I'll notice that a cute girl keeps looking at me from across the room. Eventually I'll get up and go talk to her, but as soon as I approach I'll notice a lot of negative body language like folding up their arms, talking in a quiet voice, and a look of disorientation in their eyes. I'm not saying it's because they think I'm a creep or anything like that, but I think it's more that overall social skills among society has diminished which has made talking to strangers face-to-face a very nerve-racking situation, and thus it creates an awkward exchange where I don't know how to play off that and therefore leaves them with the impression that they had a negative experience with me, so they conclude that they don't particularly like me because of how they felt during the exchange, whereas it was really a matter of them just having poor social skills.

Man, this post is starting to get pretty cringe-worthy lol. It's really not that bad, because like I said I do have some friends and it's not like I'm depressed about anything because I keep busy. And I have mutual female interest in my life, too.

But my point is, there are definitely a lot more challenges to establishing a healthy social life than simply getting out of the house. Just wanted to illustrate some of them.
