You only have to pay to play first party games online and only for the Switch. 3DS and Wii U are still free online.

I believe the games that require an online subscription are ARMS, Splatoon, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros.

Nope. I should have put quotations around "free" as well.

Well actually yes. I can think of one thing.

@GanglyKhan
How much is Smash Bros? Or is it a general fee so you can play all those games with one payment?

It's a general fee. $20/year and it nets you a bunch of NES games, also with online support.

Keep in mind each separate user account on a Switch will require their own subscription.

That last bit sounds pretty standard, at least on Xbox and PS. $20 isn't a lot to pay. Thanks for the help!

Still appears to be using peer to peer rather than dedicated servers though, which is annoying.

The really bad part is that they lock save backups behind the subscription. The only way you can backup Switch save data is through the cloud, and only while you have an active subscription. Its a baffling and terrible restriction that I hope gets rolled back.

I had better connections in Gears of War on a 512kb dl back in 2006 than I have on servers today.

So there's no way to save to a drive? No way to copy or dl?

I'm pretty sure you can try out online a month before paying, so you know if it's worth it to you.

Might be for Smash Bros. But I technically don't have the console yet.

Nope. The completely BS reason they gave was that its an anti-cheating measure. Of course every other game company has figured out how to let you backup saves for free, while avoiding cheating (even Nintendo themselves with the Wii and Wii U).

What kind of cheating? Like game saves where you switch serial numbers with another gamer's save so the system thinks it's yours?
