If Cloud wins this round, well get Cloud vs Zelda, which is a new matchup and will test whether Zelda is number 2.
If Mario wins, well get Mario vs Zelda Pt2, which is far from guaranteed to flip in Marios favor (the gap was over 500 weighted votes last time) and a same fanbase grand final that will depress turnout. In the end, all three are fodder for Link at his most unbeatable yet. I wonder if Mario would be able to score 40% on Link this year, but I have strong doubts.

Just look at the GOTY 2017 distribution among BOTW vs SMO It was something like BOTW 120 - SMO 0 Even though SMO has a slightly higher review average with most aggregators.
