Looking at the numbers yesterday, wow, there really seems to have been stuffing/a rally for Samus. No way she jumps from 100 outsider votes more than Mario to 900 in a few days without some fuckery at play.

Vlado there is one question that must be asked

Why do we vote for a character?
Name YOUR reasons of all the possible reasons I thought about -

1.You like the design
2.You like the character personalty/writing
3.You like the character games
4.You bracket vote
5.You recognize the character/consider it a gaming icon
6.You support the underdog
7.You vote because that character has the better match picture

Let's be honest, many people vote because of #3
Nobody really considers Link or Crono to be amazing and well written characters, they are just mute
If it was a contest of best characters in terms of writing? hell, Phoenix Wright probably would have been in the top 10
If you want to believe we should vote based on #2, then Mario shouldn't win anything, he is barely a character, even in the RPG series (I like him enough because he has charm, but as a character he isn't worth much)

All of those apply to some extent (except 4 because it's silly, and 7, that's a pretty fickle way to vote). I'd vote for a better character from a game I like less in a heartbeat, e.g. Alucard over Cloud.

But I'm far from the general case. As you said, people like Link's game, and Crono's, and they like self-insert characters. But their design being cool also helps. Design is part of a character's appeal, along with writing. For many people, it's probably even more important.
