http://www.classlawdc.com/2018/11/26/bethesda-game-studios-deceptive-trade-practices-investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Bethesda Game Studios for releasing a heavily-glitched game, Fallout 76, and refusing to issue refunds for PC purchasers of the game who found it to be unplayable because of its technical problems. While minor bugs and glitches are expected with the release of most new games, Fallout 76 launched with a 56GB patch that has proven to be but a starting point for the games problems. Gamers who have tried to receive a refund because of the games myriad glitches have been unable to do so since they downloaded the game, leaving them to deal with an unplayable experience until patches bring it back to a playable state.

I hope this sets a new precedent in the industry as giving consequence to publishers who think it's perfectly acceptable to rush out a broken game and patch it later

Their previous games (up until Fallout 4) were really ambitious and ahead of their time.

The problem is more companies started on the whole open world thing and make them without glitches.

This is such terrible logic. Unless you frequent forums or follow gaming closely you wouldn't know this. Which the majority of people who play videogames don't, they just see a game on TV or something and buy it

It feels like two dev teams working on their games: one team who creates these amazing worlds which are vast, and then you have another team who does the coding for quests, items, creating different upgrades, puts items in caves/towns/dungeons. The first team does a splendid job while the second team doesn't know what the hell they are doing.

Doesn't matter that the 2nd team is shit when gamers still flock to their products anyways.

Literally thousands of people playing the Beta confirmed it was a fucking shot show. They let people play the game for free and it was garbage. Why would you expect the game release a month later to be vastly improved?

What you're experiencing is the fact that there's one team, and the second team that would normally be working on the engine doesn't exist. Fallout 76 uses the Creation Engine that is 7 years old at this point, and you can only "patch" an engine so many times before you get all the awful glitches you see now.

I figured it would be easier to explain to him without having to go over the details of what normally differs between major and minor revisions in engine versions. If you want to go ahead and explain to a total layman how a 7 year old engine can be upgraded only so much before you need to start over then go right ahead.

I don't need to explain that because that isn't a correct assumption either. Plenty of game engines out there are built from stuff from the 90's.

Titanfall 2 runs like a dream and that uses a game engine from 2004. The latest Unreal engine still has stuff in there from the 90's.

The Creation Engine itself is a revision from the engine used in Morrowind.

An engine is also a collection of different development tools that can be changed and configured too. Rockstar games feel unique because of Euphoria but that only handles animations for example.

Even with all of this I still know next to jack shit about game development. This shit is complicated. When it comes to engines and development stories we can only really listen to game developers themselves when it comes to working on it and what their issues are. We can't just assume things because of some surface level information we can gleam from mods and credits.

If you're interested in this stuff noclip does have a documentary that goes into some of the challenges with implementing Fallout 76 multiplayer on the creation engine. I don't think there's anything for their other games unfortunately.

Except they have Id Software at their disposal who could make them an engine for whatever they need as shown by Machine Games, Tango, and Arkane who all have engines built using Id Tech as a base but choose to use their busted and broken one because Bethesda are incompetent hacks who can't use anything else.

Also if you even knew about HALF of the bullshit you routinely spouted you'd know there's a big difference between what Bethesda did with the Creation Engine and what Epic did with the Unreal Engine.

That would be up to Zenimax. Bethesda Game Studios don't run the entire company. EA wanted Bioware to use Frostbite and that didn't work out for them.

I don't think any of those games do the same thing as Elder Scrolls or Fallout anyway. How's the mod support for example? I haven't heard anything.

Making an entire new engine for Elder Scrolls and Fallout isn't some easy endeavour. Game engines aren't just a one size fits all thing.

This is not even comparable like at all, the team that made ME:A was a brand new team made up of people straight out of college unfamiliar the Frostbite Engine make a game it wasn't designed for. Id Software have literal tech wizards on their hands even with Carmack gone and wouldn't have these problems.

No shit, that's why they're all BASED off Id tech, can you learn to fucking read?

Have you not heard modders BEGGING Bethesda to use a new engine? You can't leverage them in favor of Bethesda's incompetence in this argument

Darmik posted...

I wasn't aware these were noobs who've never made a game before and not skilled game developers with decades of experience working for AAA developers and publishers under their belts, oh wait...

That's not what I meant and you know it. Epic actually upgraded their engine accordingly for each generation of consoles instead of incremental upgrades that age poorly like what we're seeing now with Fallout 76.

Why must you endlessly split hairs for the sake of exonerating a corporation?
