Since people bitch about load times and draw distance, games are more likely to keep the textures on the models uncompressed. This means HUGE install sizes.. and the benefit to players like us is not having to wait 30 seconds to a minute for an area to load after you already boot up the game and wait that initial loading session.

To be honest I struggle to think why I'd need more than 5 installed at any one time. Mind you I don't download games and don't have a shitty internet connection really so don't need to horde games on my HDD for no reason.

Yes. You can even upgrade your HDD on the PS3 too. I only need a 500GB HDD so I'm fine with the stock pile one but options are available.

Keep in mind not every game company is good at designing their games in a way where load times are very friendly. I am playing Spiderman on PS4 (a launch PS4 not a fancy pro one) right now and am very happy with the load times it's long but at least you never get them going from area to area it's just going inside and outside buildings. In the old days I remember getting load screens if I went to a certain area of the city from another.

The longer load times would be due to the amount of time wasted by the PS4's calculator CPU decompressing the files, not the time spent reading the files from the SSD. File reading will also likely be bottlenecked overall by the PS4's CPU to not be able to take full advantage of an SSD.

Decompression = longer load times bottlenecked by the CPU

And I don't own a PS4.

Honestly I would be happy with a downgrade in graphics if it meant faster load times. I don't need my games to look hyper-realistic and have state of the art top notch visuals.

As long as it looks 'good enough' (meaning, if it doesn't have vomit inducing graphics) and more importantly, if it's fun to play, I don't really care.

Then again...I still enjoy older games that look terrible by today's standards. Some games that even look terrible by yesterday's standards.

This is the company whose current gen console only comes with 32GB, forcing you to either go physical or buy a memory card. He's not wrong when he says Nintendo lives in the past, in more ways than one they do.

I prefer physical. Sure, I have to wait for it to come in the mail, or I have to go out and actually buy it from a store. But I actually own it at that point, and could resell it if I chose to, or let someone borrow it. You can't re-sell a digital game (without selling your whole account, which is against the tos I think), and you certainly can't lend it to a friend.

When you buy a game digitally, you don't actually own it. And if for some reason the company went belly up (which is extremely unlikely, I know, but still possible) all your digital games go with it.

Smash for Wii U was around 16 GB and Brawl was like 8 GB or something I think.

It is kinda amazing how much content they can fit in every Smash game and yet the games themselves are never ridiculously huge like on PS4/Xbone.

2-4 TB external drives are pretty cheap, like $80-$120. I have a 2TB, and I have 10 "big" games (Alien: Isolation, Destiny, Gears 4, Halo MCC, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, & Vampyr), along with 18 "smaller" games (Beyond Eyes, Captain Spirit, Child of Light, Forgotton Anne, GoT Telltale, LEGO Marvel's Avengers, LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens, Life Is Strange BTS, Life Is Strange 1, Life Is Strange 2, Little Nightmares, Magic: Duels, The Turing Test, TWD 1-4, and The Wolf Among Us), and I still have 1.5 TB free.

Largest two games I have are HITMAN (69GB) and DOOM (70GB). I think this is more of an issue that modern action / shooting games are bloated as hell with lots of uncompressed audio and video for 20 different languages that you will never use.

Comparatively a game like Dragon Quest XI is only 31GB and Divinity: Original Sin 2 is 54GB and they both came out in the past year.

I have a 500GB SSD for gaming but I don't download more than a couple of games at any time. My new GPU came with Battlefield V but I don't play these types of games so I am giving it to a friend.

I think that 50GB is reasonable, as we've had that as a standard for a while now, but I think that 4k textures and those 27 different languages should be optional downloads as many people do not use them.

Though the Switch's internal storage is so small that even after archiving literally everything on the system except Monster Hunter (which I'm currently playing and therefore don't really want to archive just yet), I still don't have room to download Smash. I'm gonna have to either throw an SD card in there (which was an inevitability, really) or archive MH the night of the 6th to make room for the download.

Any game that tried to read over 100 GB directly from a disc would run absolutely terribly due to how slow optical drives are. Most physical games still require large installs these days because of that. That number also doesn't include DLC, so I'm not sure why you brought it up.
