Current Events > Is Final Fantasy XIII REALLY that bad?

I played it a little on the 360 but sold it with a bunch of other games to get my Xbox One. I enjoyed the 4 or 5 hours I played and I bought it on Black Friday since it's backwards compatible now.

I haven't started the game yet since I started Diablo III first. (Also bought on Black Friday) Is it really as terrible as people say? Does it get worse the later you get into the game or something?

Some people hate the linear maps or didn't enjoy the characters/story.

If you enjoyed the first 5 hours then you'll likely enjoy the rest of the game.

There is barely any character customization and the gameplay is really restrictive.

It's a game where you play once and never touch it again.

Iunno. I beat it so I must not of thought it was that bad. I hadn't finishes 12 until I could speed it up. The battle system in 12 was way more fun but the story didn't keep my attention at all. 13 didn't have an amazing story but at least it was somewhat interesting while playing it.

No. Its worse. The story is nonsense, all of the characters are unlikable, and its basicslly just a hallway simulator where you walk in a straight line, battle 2 monsters, watch a 10 minute cutscene and repeat the process. The only good things about the game are the graphics and music

I actually really enjoyed it. The battle system is one of the better ones in the series, imo.

Only thing I didn't really like was how you don't get any choice over your party composition for like 90% of the game because everybody's always off doing their own thing instead of sticking together in a big group.

I think the combat is probably my second fave in the series behind 5 and the music is wonderful.

But it has possibly the worst cast of heroes in the history of gaming and the plot is convoluted and terrible. And you basically just go in a straight line room to room all game.

The postgame also makes no sense. To make the strongest weapons for each character you have to farm the strongest enemies in the game. Once you get all the weapons for everyone you don't need them since you beat the strongest enemies already.

I thought the combat was pretty fun once I figured out the flow of it. The story is terrible. I didn't mind the linearity itself, just that it was badly paced

I really liked how they did the characterization in this one even though most of the main cast is unlikeable.

That alone and the music made me enjoy the game, but yeah, the story isn't that good, and the combat is all macromanagement with paradigm switching... it feels like you're just switching job roles while you let autobattle take care of the rest

Terrible game.

Literally the formula is:

Corridor > Monster > Corridor > Cutscene > Boss > Cutscene

Rinse, repeat, ad infinitum.

Chapter 11 gives you a super boring "open world" to explore where 80% of everything can more or less kick your ass unless you want to grind your ass off.

Chapter 9 as I recall is the only breather you get.

No towns, no real exploration, and characters that are largely a snooze fest. And uh...plot? Bleh.

It feels like they were trying to make an action game but were obligated to rpg mechanics and resented it.

I actually really liked XIII and think it is massively underrated. The haters are very vocal.

I liked the story/music/lore/characters/graphics/battle system quite a bit.

You dont need to play 1-3. 4 is when they git gud, and 9 and Tactics are the last really good ones.

Agree with all the negatives everyone has given. Awful game, loved FF3-10. Never played 2 or 12 and thought 1 was good just really dated.

The only character I liked was Sazh and it sucks that once Hope learns haste, Sazh basically becomes obsolete unless fighting those huge bosses where his blitz does a lot of damage.

These things will increase your chances of enjoying FFXIII:
--if you like digging into combat and optimizing your play
--if you like well balanced mechanics
--If you like in media res openings to stories
--if you like characters and stories that subvert or deconstruct the standards of the genre

These things will decrease your chances of enjoying FFXIII:
--if you like exploring an expansive world and discovering things
--if you like customizing your characters
--if you like straightforward storytelling

If you decide to play the game, I recommend turning off the mini-map, staying open to experimenting with paradigms, and keeping an eye out for ways that you can use manual command entry to do better than Auto-battle. And if you have specific questions, drop by the FFXIII board.
