Looking back and seeing what people considered the best games in these years and how they end up being some of the most overrated / prestigious pieces of crap ever. Anyone else remember when games like The Last of Us and Journey and Call of Duty were winning game of the year awards because there were no other good games to win?

2010 was the year I bought my PS3, and 2012 my PS Vita. I think it was a great era for JRPG fans. This is when almost all JRPG localizations now started including Japanese voices, which was a major issue back on PS2/PSP when we had to undub everything.

A lot of really fun JRPGs were coming out back then. Cross Edge, Ar tonelico Qoga, the Agarest series, the Neptunia series, Trinity Universe, more Disgaea games, Resonance of Fate... and also Star Ocean: The Last Hope International and Mugen Souls, which I enjoyed so much that I actually ended up doing the ridiculously time consuming platinum trophies. I also ended up getting addicted to rhythm games for a while, thanks to Hatsune Miku Project Diva F. Good times!

I had a lot of fond memories from 2011: Deus Ex Human Revolution, L.A. Noire, Skyrim, Portal 2, Battlefield 3 (don't knock it, it is fun with a group of friends), Saint's Row the Third, etc. Hell, there were even some great games released in the other years that you mentioned. Just don't go by what the mainstream thinks is "good".

It's funny because the early 2010s are awful of JRPGs. Too much focus on targeting the "weeb" audience. All of the games you listed are awful.

I never played Darkstalkers, but Cross Edge was quite a nostalgia trip for me, being a huge fan of Ar Tonelico, Mana Khemia and Atelier Iris back on PS2.

Also, tc is crazy wrong:

2010
Mario Galaxy 2
Red dead redemption
Super meat boy
Fallout new Vegas
Dead rising 2
Bioshock 2

2011
Dark souls
Skyrim
Portal 2

I'm gonna stop right there since I'm on my phone, and the point has already been proven.

Edit: I decided to look a bit further and 2013 had gtav and Bioshock infinite... Zelda link between worlds, Mario 3d world, and lots of others...

I'd argue that the large majority of my favorite games of all time came out between 2010 and 2014. I'll easily go back and play lots of those games even today, while there are very few games prior to 2010 that I'll go back and still play today.

And while there are a few real gems that have come out since 2014, the gaming landscape is getting bleaker and bleaker from my perspective - multiple franchises have basically been murdered, there are fewer and fewer games on the horizon worth caring about, and even the games that should be good wind up getting castrated by punitive microtransactions.

That's not why they won. They won because most GotY awards are horseshit anyway.

Call of Duty wins because it makes so damned much money and is one of the more easily accessible mainstream games for young males (especially ones in college where it cross-pollinates easily, in much the same way EA and 2K's sports games do). And The Last of Us won because so many people couldn't stop fellating it as the GREETEST GAME EVAR, drowning out all dissent and talking it up like it was the most innovative, influential, and ground-breaking game ever made (*cough*Undertale*cough*). It also nets points from the "SEE, VIDEO GAMES CAN BE ART! NOW YOU HAVE TO RESPECT MY HOBBY!" crowd, who are still constantly trying to validate themselves because Roger Ebert said mean things about video games 15 years ago (*cough*Undertale*cough*).

TLoU is like Avatar in that respect - Avatar sure as unholy fuck wasn't the best movie of 2009/2010, but there are plenty of people who would have told you it was at the time. It's only really later, once the hype dies down and the dissenting voices can be heard over the roar that you start to question it.

A lot of my favourite games came out 2010 to 2013, probably because that's when I was gaming the hardest. 2014 is probably about when I slowed down.

I'll agree that TLoU is overrated mediocrity though.

This is true for me, too. PS3 in 2010, Vita for my wife in 2012, Vita for myself in 2014. Plus: I got the 3DS at launch in 2011, and the 3DS library is a big plus.

I am going to argue that this sentiment, for gamers like me who have JRPGs as a favorite genre, is the worst thing about gaming in the listed time frame.

TC you're very wrong.

Using these as a guideline:

To be fair, Metacritic is kind of a poor judge of quality. It's a review aggregator (much like Rotten Tomatoes), so the scores on the site don't actually mean what the vast majority of people think they mean. Very few people understand how review aggregators actually work.

A game with a Metacritic score of 90 isn't necessarily better (or even better reviewed) than a game with a Metacritic score of 80. A game can get nothing but lukewarm reviews that still count as "positive" and have a higher score than a game where the positive reviews are far more passionate and praising, but which is more divisive and has more overall "negative" reviews (even if those negative reviews are minor, complaining about nitpicky things, or are even protest reviews related to other socio-political or ideological agendas).

Then once you factor in things like reviewers having pro-corporate biases (or ones who've been outright paid to give positive reviews for terrible games/movies/etc) or the handful of contrarian reviewers who deliberately cultivate opposed views to most people so they can get hate-clicks to their site, the numbers get even more nebulous.

Sure, it can help give a rough idea of what people think of games (in the same way sales numbers can), but it doesn't really give any sort of objective value analysis (which way too many people tend to assume it does).

No I dont think games rated 87 are always better then 80 games but usually anything under 70 is trash and games above 80 are at least worth a try
