I'm moving out soon. I want THE BEST home security stuff that an average joe like me can buy. I was thinking maybe putting a bear trap at the front door so that any unlucky person will step on it and get their leg crushed, but I feel like I need more than that.

If only there were some kind of implement that could be pointed at an intruder, and upon your pressing of a switch, cause a small piece of metal to approach said intruder at a high velocity, likely decreasing their ability to cause you harm.

Invest in some high quality locks and doors. You can have a pro company reinforce your door frame and install a steel core door for a decent fee. It's worth it for the peace of mind.

In some areas you can also invest in steel bars for your doors and windows for extra protection. Check your local laws to see if you can.

Window locks are an often over looked part of security. Make sure yours function properly and the windows are reinforced to stay closed using a bar or stick so they cant be pulled open.

Cameras are also a new wave of home security tech that is getting more affordable. You can get an 8 camera set up for a few hundred bucks. It makes a good deterrent and if you do get broken into, it can really help in nailing the suspect. Even some cheapy fake cameras may be enough to scare off a would be intruder.

Fencing is another good option to protect your garage. Have your back gate as high as your city allows and have a proper chain on it. And lock up any garage or shed well.motion lights can also help if people try to sneak into your yard.

A big ass dog helps too.

Home made door jams to keep your doors from being opened while you are inside. If your door is near a staircase or a sunken landing, 2 boards in a T shape can keep it from opening.

Home security alarms are another popular choice both silent and loud. There are a host of companies to choose from with many options to fit your budget. You can also purchase do it your self alarms that when activated give off very loud beeps or siren noises and alert your phone. These can easily scare off an intruder.

Proper warning and signage letting intruders know you are watching them and the house is under protection. You can buy high quality warning signs that point out the consequence of breaking and entering and criminal trespassing. Maybe change their mind before they commit the crime.

Set up or join a neighborhood watch. This let's all members of the community look out for one another if something goes wrong. You can sign up for Nixle. It's a program that emails and text you about alerts in your area. Anything from missing kids, to fires and suspicious characters in the area. It's free and good to have. Facebook also has a neighborhood watch for new yorkrly every city to spread the word faster if something happens.

Or you can invest in a gun. If someone does break in you can defend yourself. Many choose a shotgun, but overpenetration can be a serious issue in home defense. An AR15 believe it or not is very light on in home over penetration. Or just a classic 9mm with hollow points. I personally use a VP9.

Any of these can work. All of them together and you are probably as good as s you can be.
