Mega Man has a whimsical fun feeling to him. I like that. He's not exactly complex, but he's got a solid design and the power stealing thing is cool.

Mega Man X is Mega Man with the fun sucked out of him. He's a boring character with some poor attempts at characterization tossed in in an attempt to give him depth. He's got a more serious edge to him which works to his detriment and his pacifist gimmick is super stupid considering he blows so much shit up.

okay makes sense - i've never done more than scratched the surface of the mega man games so from here it very much seemed like "mega man or also mega man"

Yeah. I think most people who thought they'd have identical contest strength were thinking the same thing, and I'd imagine enough Mega Man fans do treat them identically since there are similarities, but there's enough distinction that a lot of Mega Man fans probably aren't.

MMX's love among the more hardcore Mega Man fanbase is kinda mixed. I'd strongly consider taking Zero over him if they ever had a match. Strongly.

I think it's easier to like X over Classic if you only played the SNES ones where he wasn't really much of a character because he's got super cool armor and abilities the original doesn't have

but yeah he's kind of whatever from MMX4 and on

I think I like Tifa the character more than either character but I don't really like FF7 much as a game which brings down my opinion of her. I haven't played any of the MMX games yet but Mega Man 2 and 3 are some of my favorite games of the 8-bit era. I'd probably still vote for Tifa but it would be a bit tough.

SNES X is still SRS Mega Man so I'd still vote Mega Man over SNES X because it's just a more boring version of the more light hearted OG Mega Man for me. I'll take a poorly characterized light hearted character,over a poorly characterized serious one every time. Case in point Mario vs Crono.

X4 and on are when the character starts getting legit bad though yeah. X6 and X7 IIRC is when it actually started grating to a point where I started to dislike the character slightly.

I mean I don't exactly hate X even considering all the games but he's definitely one of my least favorite Mega Man characters.

An excellent summary of why Mega Man is more popular than X.

Anyway I really like Tifa as a character so I... think I'd vote her over MM, but I wouldn't be sure about it until it was actually time to vote. Tifa > MMX was easy. (I still like MMX pretty well to be clear, being a stand-in for some of my favourite games goes a long way!)

They've just never been a big deal here! I've never talked to another British person about Mega Man outside of this website

Yeah Mega Man has zero presence in the UK

One of my school friends had a little brother who watched the cartoon I think and drew pictures of MM. That is literally the only time I've seen it.
