I think they will. I think it would be insanely stupid and would almost certainly result in a Trump win combined with massive damage to the party. Why do I think this?

Look, I'm going to be honest here. The Democratic party doesn't represent democrats beyond as a voting base. I'll be using the terms 'Dem's' to refer to democratic people and Democratic Party to refer to the political entity. Dem's can be nice, good, and decent people. Some may argue that they think with their hearts instead of minds or only care about minorities or something else, but Dem's at least TYPICALLY at least try to be decent-ish people. The problem is that the Democratic Party doesn't care about Dem's. They care about power and control. They espouse talking points and make promises only to get people to vote for them and then only fulfill them to keep said power. As such they'll pick a candidate who will grant them that power should they get elected. When Bernie was running he was a Dem who was outside of the Democratic Party's control. I won't say he would have beaten Trump (I'm not stupid. It would have been a different election with different factors in play) but I will say that, had Bernie won, the Democratic Party would have lost (though not as bad as with Trump). That's why they rallied Hillary despite the fact that even Trump supporters liked Bernie more than her. Because the only way that the Democratic Party would win was if Hilary won and they felt they could rely on the Dem's to vote for them. So best to ensure Bernie get's 'removed' before they tackle the 'joke' that was Trump... Only to have it fall apart.

Thing is that they're looking at an identical set-up again; but it's going to be a much harder sell. Any candidate who comes forwards now will likely be either far left or so repulsed by what happened that they won't 'play ball'. So if Hilary runs again you can feel assured that the Democratic Party will try to rally her even against the Dem's wishes simply because she's the one who will give them the power they want.

Honestly, it's really sad to see that the Democratic Party has become the very thing that they loved to claim the Republicans were. Namely a party ruled over by a wealthy and semi-shadowy few who use the party to further their own status while relying on voters who toe the party line and fearmongering to maintain their power. Dem's should be smarter than this. The Democratic Party has become rotten and corrupt through and through and the Dem's need either put it to order or to pasture if they want a chance of beating Trump in 2020.

Very good analysis. I think if people like Bernie, Tulsi Gabbard and Ocasio-Cortez can take over the party in the way Trump is doing to the GOP, it can be steered into a better direction again. The huge difference is that Trump is taking over GOP as president, while those three and the few others in the democratic party who are like them are, in comparison, nobodies.

To be honest, I am of the belief that the Democratic Party is beyond redemption and the dems would be better served scuttling it and forming a new party to properly reflect their beliefs as opposed to trying to weed out all the corruption and problems that have seeped in. However, even if they did that the problem is that a lot of people would still vote for the Democratic Party simply due to name recognition and the notion that they are supposed to vote for that party.

This may shock some people... but Republican's aren't racist and don't hate women. But, more to the point, the reason why the Republican party doesn't have to 'flush out corruption' is because... that's kind of already what we're doing. Trump was not the pick of the Republican Party by a loooooong shot (that would have probably been Cruz) but he was the pick of the Republicans. That he wasn't the pick of the party was part of the reason he was picked in the first place. Republican's felt as if their party had failed to properly represent them under Obama and even so far back as under Bush and Clinton. Right now it's in the process of taking advantage of the disharmony in the left to try and bolster and redefine itself and it's sort of succeeding with it disavowing fringe groups among other things.
