The Netflix produced anime has been on a consistent decline after the ultimate high of Devilman and the very solid AICO, but I still have some faith.

To be fair I haven't watched Godzilla 3 yet, but 1 and 2 sure sucked. A disappointment for both Netflix, Godzilla, and Urobochi. Maybe I'll just blame Polygon.

I feel like your Death Note comparisons should be levied towards the live action Netflix Bebop, but maybe they learned their lesson on that one.

My reaction to live action Bebop was relatively lukewarm also, for the record.

Though I will say that for various reasons I would be slightly more hopeful both for live action Bebop and for anime Blade Runner than I was for live action Death Note.

Like these aren't guaranteed to suck, at least. It's just that's the option I'd bet on.

I watched Zomebieland Saga today

Idol stuff, man.

Zombieland Saga episode today, wasn't quite as good as Lily's last week but literally nothing will get better than that I'm almost positive.

Saki is still best girl though so it's all good.

I keep expecting it to drop, but it's sorta hovering up there just enough to be in the AotY conversation.

That conversation being Crybaby, Antarctica, Rascal, and Zombieland.

Was really hoping there wouldn't be a show I had to feel bad about taking off the top 3 this year. Last year was a lot easier with only two locks.

Episode 8 is an episode of the year contender, yeah. Really don't see Zombieland falling into generic idol trappings, either. Still taking the piss out of them. Also has the best male character of the year!

That said I'm pretty confident it's gonna end up at number 4. In fact, Gridman could sneak ahead of it depending on where it goes.

Man, poor Franxx. I still like it and all, but so squandered. I barely even think about it anymore.

That's a toughie. I don't even hate the ending, but just how much that show was achieving greatness during the middle of it's run only to...end. Something else.

I haven't put any thought into most disappointing yet.

Megalobox beated. There were a lot of things I didn't like about this show, so I'm going to start with the good parts.

1. The music. Holy shit did this sound good. The songs were great, and the show knew how to use them to make moments cooler. I loved it. It's not the sort of music I'd listen to on its own or anything, but it was perfect in context. The rap songs were awesome too. Possibly the best music of any anime this year.

2. The style. The animation was all really good, and the low resolution felt better than I thought it would. There were a bunch of moments throughout the show that felt super cool because of the way they were presented. The bridge confrontation in the first episode was absolutely incredible. I wasn't really feeling the show until then, but that made me regret taking so long to watch it. Those cool moments are the main things that kept me from having a 100% negative opinion of the series.

Because I hated pretty much everything else about it. The characters were all garbage. Not even one of them was the slightest bit interesting. They were pretty much all cyphers and any 'development' they got was pretty much meaningless. Joe wasn't even a person. The story was pretty trash in general. I hated the debt storyline, and any time the criminal dude showed up I just wanted to fast forward because of how lame his plot was. Most of the twists that happened were just shitty. Yuri fighting gearless in the final fight was the cap on all the extreme dumbness.

And then there's the setting. None of it made any sense. All the "non-citizen" stuff from the start was dumb and I wish it didn't exist, and they just ignored it for most of the series anyway. More importantly, megalo boxing as a sport is just the dumbest thing. If you fought with all that extra power and no armor, every fight would end with fatalities (people die in regular boxing and they'd die way more often if people were hitting that much harder). With that in mind, Joe fighting without a gear was extra dumb, especially since he can't block right. His arm bones would be shattered from blocking and he'd be dead a dozen times over. He wasn't even that heavy: there's a reason that people don't fight above their weight class in boxing, which is that they'd basically always lose. The gears just exacerbate that disparity. Bleh.

Ended up giving it a 4/10, since it had the stylish thing down at least.

I really liked Nanbu in Megalo Box, as far as characters go. He was interesting and had a solid arc.

I can see liking the overall visual style, but I'm surprised to see praise for the actual animation. I thought it was rather weak from a technical standpoint. The fights for me were carried by the emotion involved, never how they looked.
