One of those on eBay that have 200+ games added to them.

I just got some retroactive pay from a raise that took affect back in July and I wanted to get one for the kids and myself.

Has anyone heard of any problems with one of these?

Just buy a new one and hack it yourself.

Is it even legal for people to be selling those hacked?

It's incredibly easy. I did it and I'm not a technical guy.

Some of the sellers have made up a good collection even with sega games. There are sellers willing to costumize too.
They usually go for just over $100

I can't do it myself because my desktop is ancient.

Unless your PC is running Win 98 I'm pretty sure they'll emulate 8 bit platforms at least. The requirements are low. Hell you could do the same with a Pi for like $40.

Isn't it just loading ROMs anyway? I don't think your PC even needs to be good enough to actually do the emulating, but unless it's 20 years old it should be able to handle that too.

My newer laptop drank an entire glass of milk thanks to my daughter, so I currently use a PC from 2004 running Windows XP to do my SNES hakchi-ing. Works just fine.

Honestly I'm ancient too and don't like sitting at a desk with a computer, wether its brand new or 7+ years old.
The GPD looks cool but I'm not into handhelds and its about the same price for the system I can easily plug into my tv.

Rule of thumb was 10 the processing power of the machine you're trying to emu, but if 8 bit is all you're gunning for you can literally just do that with anything made in this decade.

It's not the same thing as telling somebody to change their own oil. However you look at it, the person selling this is either:

- Scalping an item that's still attainable
- Making a personal profit of illegally obtained software

And who knows if the thing is even legit. Personally I'd rather get one from the store that I know is legit and hasn't been opened. I don't care if people make ROMs available but to actually sell them is something I think is really scummy.

How much more powerful is the Xbox One (not X) than the Xbox 360? Xbox 360 requires an EXTREME amount of power to even emulate properly, and Xbox One shouldn't even powerful enough to emulate Xbox 360 games properly. Granted, a ton of optimization is needed for games, but they all look, and run better than they do on Xbox 360 (and it completely eliminates screen-tearing by forcing V-Sync in all of its games). Take Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter for example:

Xbox One backwards compatibility is nothing short than a miracle in software engineering.
