Birthright citizenship shouldn't exist anywhere. Only way you should have birthright citizenship to any country is if one of your parents is a citizen of that country. Most countries don't allow you to be a citizen simply because you were born there.

I live in China (Canadian, wife is Thai). If I had another child while living here do you think they'll be able to get Chinese citizenship? Not a fucking chance. Same goes for most places in the world.

Yeah because we should clearly be trying to emulate 3rd world countries with dubious human rights pasts. Should we execute inmates and charge their families for the bullet too? Should we institute a one child policy for several decades? Lets start using tiger penis as medicine too!

Funny how a guy who moved out of Canada because he has NO SKILLS TO MAKE A LIVING and married a Thai woman because they love westerners is lecturing us about immigration law, could tour average Chinese or Thai person with zero skills move to America to teach Chinese language, with no qualification? Huh?

Look at this aggression.

Here's the thing.

That doesn't fucking matter in this situation, not even a little bit. Every single person in the world should be against Trump even thinking he can do this regardless of their opinion on birthright citizenship. The most cross-eyed, slack-jawed, cross-burning racist should be against this. Why? Because it's Trump believing that he can unilaterally bypass the Constitution with no input from the other branches of government.

Dude, 45 is all about setting precedents.

The precedent he is setting right now is that he can do this. He already ignored the constitution before (emoluments clause) and rigged SCOTUS

What could stop him?

A Constitutional Convention called by 2/3rd's the states.
Or a bill by 2/3rd's the House and Senate.

Here's something you don't get about Trump: the guy will take any side that gets him a lot of people cheering for him.

He's a crass womanizer but that's just his "rich snob" attitude. When it comes to things like this, he knows he can rile up the hardline conservative boomer crowd by pandering to them and so he starts finding everything they've ever wanted and promising it, whether or not it's realistic.

So they'll get behind him and give him adoration for being "their guy" when reality will play out much differently.

Trump is a slave to adoration. The only other thing he can do besides bask in people's acclaim is to complain about the people who won't join in.

They could make it so you need have at least one parent to be a citizen. Many other countries, both developed and non-developed, do this. Unrestricted birthright citizenship seems to be a North and South American thing. It's not the first time the constitution has been edited and wont be the last. And I'm sure all the Lefties would be creaming their pants if the second amendment were changed or removed entirely.

No, fuck that idea. I don't give a damn what other nations are doing, the entire backbone of our country is based on the freedom for all its citizens and that if you're born here you are a citizen. Likewise if you want to change this you need to actually go through the proper channels and not some stupid Stephen Miller ethno nationalist written EO. Which, by the way, would be shot down in court and only hamstring the system and cost tax payer money.

And as a gun owning liberal, you can take your strawman and shove it

Well it shifted the conversation away from Pittsburgh and the bombings.

Trump is doubling down on his fear mongering of immigration so any chance he can shift it back to this, the 5000 troops or the "invasion" its win-win for him.

The problem is deeper that this.

This is how you go about doing ethnic cleansing in the 21st century.

Imagine you're 60 years old and need to renew your passport. But they keep it instead and then ICE kicks down your door and takes you. They insist that you need to prove that at least 1 of your parents was a citizen, your own passport and birth certificate be damned.

You're 60. Your parents are long gone. You surely don't keep a box with their expired passports do you? "Off to Mexico you go, you s****".

who can prove their parents is a citizen after they're dead? Millions of actual US citizens born from actual US citizens will get kicked out.

Obviously this will apply to Pedro Lopez whose ancestors lived in Texas before Texas was even a state. But it won't be enforced on Dmitry and Hans who are fresh off the boat and have a thick accent. Ethnic cleansing ahoy!

I'm not embracing anyone. I simply have strong beliefs when it comes to immigration. I've lived in 4 different countries throughout my life (Canada, US, Thailand and now China) and I've been a legal immigrant in all of them. I also don't believe simply being born somewhere should grant you the right to stay there when your parents aren't citizens of that country.

it's funny how you've been able to immigrate to 4 countries while you'd not have been able to do so to america if you had been chinese or thai in the same manner. You're one of those "I will use the ladder, then pull it up" kind of guys.
