Just finished and it was such a great ride. Very few jump scares and the ones that did exist were "genuine" (as in, not actually oh-it-was-just-a-cat bullshit), and boy did I not expect it to be as poignant/moving as it was.

Fantastic show, been a few threads on CE about it and a lot of people really liking it. I was surprised how great it was.

It shouldn't. I wouldn't say it's the scariest thing I've ever watched (though it's definitely really unsettling at times) but that's kinda not the point.

The last scary thing I watched was American Horror Story and I drifted away from that on episode 7.

Scarier than what I've seen of AHS, that's for sure, though admittedly I haven't seen a lot of it.

Could not possibly be a more different vibe, but yes, Good Place is incredible! Really fun and just gets better and better.

I've watched up to episode 7 which has been the only 'meh' episode so far.

The rest has been fantastic.

I've only seen one ghost hidden in the background in that last episode. Apparently there are a whole lot of them.

Episode 7 mild spoilers

When the Dad opens up the wall in the basement in the flashback there's a female ghost peering from around the corner.

I haven't looked up stuff yet so I don't get spoiled.

I didn't catch this the first time I watched, but upon watching this episode again tonight with my girlfriend I did. It's wild how many instances there are of "Is there really something there? I think there's something there."

As for jump scares being used sparingly and really well?

When Theo and Shirley are arguing in the car on the way to Hill House. Holy shit, lol. I was not expecting that.

Modern horror directors could learn a lot from this series.

Thats part of whats so great it mostly just lets you sit in tension so that when it DOES go for a jump, youre not always braced for it

I thought so as well, and then I read about the "original" ending they had planned.. which was more or less in line with how I thought it should have ended.

Spoilers for anyone that hasn't watched the entirety of the show, obviously.

Spoiler question for those who watched, one aspect Im not quite clear on

The basement

1) Was the moldy area Hugh was working on the same as the basement Luke was in with the dumbwaiter? I didnt think it was but maybe Im wrong

2) Did we ever find out anything more about that basement than that it was a bootlegging operation?

3) The zombie ghost that ripped Lukes shirt... did we get any info on that? Obviously not every ghost got or needed a backstory, but it seems like we at least got an implication of history for the more featured ghosts. I thought maybe he was the skeleton trapped in the walls, but that was Bowler Hat Ghost

One other thing I wasnt quite clear on *BIG spoilers*

Nell became the Bent Neck Lady, doomed to haunt her younger self and eventually drive her to her suicide in a perverse and horrifying time loop. But at the same time, Ghost Nell seemed fine, as fine as ghosts get, when she appeared at random times to the other siblings to try to warn them. Especially true in the finale where she saved them. Maybe she was just the Bent Neck Lady for those horrible time-warping thirty seconds, and then her spirit was freed to just haunt the house normally? Almost like it kept her alive for the drops, then she actually died after that scream. Thats actually possibly creepier, thinking that Young Nell wasnt even seeing a ghost of herself, but rather seeing her DYING self, that she was kept alive as the Bent Neck Lady for those extra thirty seconds and forced to torture herself in her dying moments...

As for her appearances as the BNL to the other family members, Im not convinced thats literally her so much as just the house tormenting them like a dick. I think when she appeared to them looking normal, that was actually Nells spirit trying to make an effort to save them.

This is probably a dont think too hard about it, its magic thing but Im curious about the ultimate fate of her soul and what you guys think.

I think Nell and the Mom could see the future. Mom saw Nelly dressed for her funeral, and Luke dead from OD.

Nell only ever saw her own future, I think

Does that mean she killed her own husband? So many questions

^I think Nells husband legit just had an aneurysm and the house taunted her but open to interpretation.

Im also not sure that Nell and Liv could see the future so much as the house just baited them/taunted them repeatedly. Nells own dying body was dangled in front of her for her whole life, which ultimately drove her to that very death. Liv kept being shown dead Luke and Nell, driving her mania to save them which then ultimately caused those very deaths (or near death, in Lukes case)

The house is a dick

Maybe. Your theory makes more sense with Nell trying to save her siblings, as a ghost

Definitely the best horror show I've ever seen. Didn't expect anything would blow American horror away so thoroughly.

The ending was a little too "Happily Ever After" for me. Made so much of the rest seem idle. Apparently the ghosts are actually harmless and mostly just bored, with one ghost being the 'real' villain. Was kind of hoping for a proper demon to emerge and really wreck.

Also, it doesn't seem there is much potential for another season, unless it's a prequel.

I didnt quite take it that way. I thought the house itself is the villain, this carnivorous presence always trying to feed. Poppy was just one of its more sadistic residents, but the victims/ghosts mostly retained their living personalities.

Like, what happened to Nell did not seem to be influenced by Poppy, nor did a bunch of the childhood occurrences. I dont think she was really the main villain, the house was, Poppy was just the one that primarily fucked up Liv.

The demon you were waiting for was the house itself. Literally shapeshifting a room into whatever a person would deem a safe space to digest and understand its prey. Pretty dark. The Crains triumphed only by strength of their family, in SPITE of the house. It lured them all there to basically finish eating them, having already violently killed Liv and Nell, and ultimately wasnt gonna let anyone go, finally having everyone back.

Its the familial love that saved them. Hugh was willing to stay with Liv, Nell was able to pull the siblings out of their Red Room nightmares, and Liv was willing/able to exert enough influence to free them as part of her deal with Hugh. The house is a vicious bastard but the ghosts are not powerless or without who they were. The Crains it has already claimed ultimately still have enough love and influence to subvert the will of the house.

Though all that said, regarding the above, its a bit ambiguous whether Poppy IS (or represents) the houses will. I tend not to think so, though, I doubt the house itself wouldve just been like ok Liv Ill leave Hugh alone, my b. I think Poppy is just another claimed victim, no more or less powerful than Liv or the other ghosts are. Shes just a mega bitch, psycho crazy in life and psycho crazy in death.
