In all seriousness it is considered the universal language as its the most spoken language in the world despite more people know it as a secondary language than a first.

I don't think it is the most spoken language, I think there are a lot more Chinese in the world than Americas, English, Hispanics, and Europeans. Even if all of non-native english speakers spoke english as second language.

You don't learn a language for practicality if you're educated, dummy, that's the point. It's another field of study like all others that you should naturally have an interest in studying. I'm not even talking about reaching native-level fluency. I've never met a well learned man who couldn't speak (passably) a second language, just as I've never met a well learned man who couldn't do at least high school level math.

It's a hobby if you're learning for fun. Or a needed skill for you. Not every needs to learn languages. Plus, I feel more people probably use math in their lives. Even in high school, when learning a language, you just need to know it enough to pass a class. If you literally don't use it afterward, most people start forgetting it. Which is probably ok since it seems to be useless to you. It is a great skill to have. But not always needed. And not having it doesn't make you uneducated...

I never bothered to really learn Spanish despite working a job once that was majority Mexican. I learned a few words and they knew how to use said word and some gestures to get their point across of what they wanted from me. It worked.

One dude would piss me off though. He'd try talking to me in Spanish and it was no secret he was very fluent in English. Like come on dude. I mean he wasn't even the broken English type he spoke it perfectly just with an accent

How crazy is it that Americans actually believe European languages are variations and "glorified dialects" of each other?
I mean for starters, most Europeans (definitely western ones) speak their native tongue + English, which even you would not manage to call a "glorified dialect" of another language, let alone other major languages (German, French). In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of what would actually fit your criteria among the major languages, which represent like 99% of the second languages people in Europe speak, except for like, Swiss-German (but good luck faulting a Swiss for that, those guys speak 3 languages by the time they're in high school).

Always funny to see monolinguals attempt to discuss language studies though, it's like hearing your grandma's hot take on video games.

Well it shows you have pretty stupid interpretations of what makes someone smart or in your words "well learned" if they have no need or no desire to learn a second language there is no point. They could spend the time learning something useful. It seems to me you just use something like this as an excuse to look down on others.

Well, clearly a guy who can't even use his own language's grammar correctly is not among them, if nothing else lmao.

Sincerely doubt it, by the way. Learning a second language is simply an academic pursuit that educated people will invariably want to at least dabble in, if not study seriously. Of course, on a video games forum this seems like a pointless discussion to have (I suppose for most of you playing a video game is an intelligent activity?), but in the real world I've yet to meet anyone who's anyone who could not speak, at least passably, a second language.

It's just another normal skill. Why waste time studying something you wont use. Some people will use it, others have just wasted their time. Plus, there are educated people who study things relevant to them instead of a language they won't use. Plenty or doctors, lawyers, etc. that are monolingual.

Sounds like you haven't met enough people. I've met plenty of educated people who speak only one language. They study things that will help them in their career.

In the end, mooreandrew58 seems to be correct in saying that you're probably using knowing more than one language to look down on others. You also seem pretty pretentious. And I get the feeling that you're probably kind of a jerk...
