You don't learn a language for practicality if you're educated, dummy, that's the point. It's another field of study like all others that you should naturally have an interest in studying. I'm not even talking about reaching native-level fluency. I've never met a well learned man who couldn't speak (passably) a second language, just as I've never met a well learned man who couldn't do at least high school level math.

It's a hobby if you're learning for fun. Or a needed skill for you. Not every needs to learn languages. Plus, I feel more people probably use math in their lives. Even in high school, when learning a language, you just need to know it enough to pass a class. If you literally don't use it afterward, most people start forgetting it. Which is probably ok since it seems to be useless to you. It is a great skill to have. But not always needed. And not having it doesn't make you uneducated...

That I made Bs in French class. Took a few years of it. Barely know any of it now aside a phrase maybe two. I never got great at speaking or understanding it in class but I was good at reading and writing it.
