This is true. KH's day vote gets neutered against Pokemon though I believe.

Either way, Square's overall performance thus far has been a little disparaging.

Pikachu's day vote was really bad today though. Nintendo's been so frontloaded with the new start time that I think it's neutered their day vote a bit.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about Square until we see one of the actual big boys in action against a proven commodity. Tomorrow's the first real test, in my opinion.

Yeah I wouldn't necessarily call square dead. All three of their failed midcarders have been historically shaky. Vivi, the one who doesn't perpetually disappoint, looked good.

Based on the last contest, he appears to be one now. Beating Zack and Hayabusa the way he did was no joke. He's certainly a bigger deal now than Tidus, Zidane, or Cecil is at this point, if nothing else.

Of course, he can still lose because you can't trust Kefka or joke characters, but yeah, I'd consider that more of a gauge of Square's standing than these other matches.

Day 17: This contest's getting crazy!

Dante > Lightning

Lightning had an oddly good showing in R1 but this was always her ceiling. I think that R1 match might end up getting a little exposed here. Pour one out for SuperNiceDog who took Lightning to win this match. He's gonna have a bad day.

Ganondorf > Chun-Li

You may just say "he repeated his result from last time" but with votals being down and TWEWY getting a port and IDFK what reason does Ganondorf still have to be this popular? Oh, right. The Drones. So glad I didn't let KP talk me into taking Dante over him, though I may be starting to feel like I should've gone with Leon after his R1 show.

Vivi > Aya Brea

I kind of figured Vivi would come back to earth this time around but he still looked solid in R1. Aya got a win, which if you're a Parasite Eve fan has to feel great, especially with how good she looked in doing so. This match was never a question though.

Leon S. Kennedy > Tidus(Donkey Kong)

I hope Leon comes out and gives the damn dirty ape a fucking mauling. Seriously, one day in and my perfect was already gone and at the expense of one of my favorite characters. I think DK might hold up pretty well against Leon though seeing how well the rest of Nintendo has fared thus far (Peach being the exception). If Leon wants to beat Vivi, he's gonna need to come out and lay down the gauntlet. I would be SO STOKED if Leon ended up taking this division. He's one of the best characters and he consistently is RIGHT THERE at the edge of being an elite character in these things and I think taking out the ol' Dorf would put him over the top. Still think it's a long shot though.

Day 18: Let the fear flow through you

Zero > Zidane (Knuckles)

Zero looked okay, and Knuckles put the fuckin smackdown on my boy Zidane, who I will probably never pick to win a match again unless we have a contest shortly after FFIX for the Switch comes out but EVEN THEN coz CHRIST. Knux good show actually makes me feel good about Shadow later on, and not picking Sonic to get upset in any of his debatable matches later on so this might be one of the 1 pointers I feel best about...

Monika(Wario) > Master Hand

Fucking rallyfear bullshit fuck reddit fuck DDLC, fuck Undertale, fuck Draven and fuck anyone who talked about this match beforehand I had Wario winning the fourpack until deadline day god I'm so mad.

Yoshi > Velvet

I'm surprised at the amount of people who picked James Sunderland to get here honestly but I guess a character from Tales of not Symphonia winning seemed farfetched to people. KP I think is the one who talked me into Anime Girl over Dude McGuy. Like I said, that should've been Pyramid Head's spot.

Pikachu > Kratos

Poor Kratos. He comes out with a GOD STOMP that speaks to him being able to make a decent, deep contest run as a newer western character and it just... it doesn't matter at all because Pikachu is going to Thunderbolt his ass back to Greece or Rome or wherever the God of War games take place to go home and be a family man. The fear is well and truly flowing through me. @LeonhartFour I hope you're right about the rat being the standout and Mewtwo being the fraud, but we'll see.

Day 19: When you walk away...

Sora > Pokemon Trainer Red

I have to say, the way the first week has gone is not inspiring much confidence in me. I wanted Sora to hit 75+ to really drive home that this site was buying in to KH... he still did pretty well against Ryo but what are the odds that Neptune is actually stronger than him? I don't think those are nonzero and I could honestly see Red coming out and curbstomping Sora and completely blowing my bracket to shreds. Hoping Riku comes out and assuages a little bit of these concerns but like I said, the fear is flowing through me.

Big Boss > Cecil Harvey(Crash Bandicoot)

It just baffles me that so many people care about Crash Bandicoot. Like, why? Anyway, I think this match will put paid to any nonsense talk about MGSV hurting Big Boss (looking at you @KamikazePotato). I think Ridley is like to have benefitted HUGELY from his Smash inclusion and with better bracket placement he could've done serious damage. Unfortunately there was a legendary hero in the way who has a lot of experience in defeating things that are too big. Big Boss is gonna roll Crash and hopefully retire him as a character because seriously, whom the fuck cares?

Alucard > Yuna

Ah yes, a fourpack where it looks like I'm gonna get it all right. Well, Yuna has taken off like a rocket since the absurd AA board vote, but Alucard handled his business with Peach according to plan. I think this may be absurdly close, but KP was on deck with the stats showing that Yuna has absolutely never been close to Alucard as far as strength goes, and the way things have gone thus far this contest there's no reason to believe she's closed the gap for any reason.

Kefka > Bomberman

Man, it feels good to be so ridiculously right about something for a change in this contest. I banked on Kefka's 2013 results being legitimate and it's looking like a safe bet with him handling his business vs. the hopefully soon to be retired grandfather of joke rally characters. This is for my money Kefka's best contest performance. It was fully set up for him to fold and let us down one more time but he came out and SMASHED the expectations, so much so that he's the only one of my spread bets that I didn't get right today and now if he spins this into a trip to the division finals it will be one of the best redemption stories in the history of these contests. War13104 took Kefka to beat Crono. 15 years later and he finally looks like he was ahead of his time!

Oh congrats to Bomberman and thanks you guys for getting me to take him over Kiryu here. I had thought Bomberman was totally worthless but this is actually a solid result for him.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one of my favorite games ever, and he's super fun to play as in that game.

Plus, Zidane is kind of middle of the pack for FF protags.

Which means he's still pretty awesome compared to the average character, but nevertheless.
