It has rape scenes and its being accused of promoting rape culture

I dont get why since the goblins committing rape are the bad guys and rape is being shown to be an evil act.

Why is the presence of rape considered to be promoting rape culture?

The manga focuses more on the rape than the VN/LN does, and like you said it's not as common or explicit as it was earlier. Not sure how it promotes rape culture when it's an anime about a dude who wants nothing other than Goblin Genocide.

I mean, it's more bestiality than anything, and it's ultimately just fiction. In nature, plenty of living beings use other beings parasitically to propagate and else as a natural instinct. Here we just see goblins use human women as a means to not go extinct, because there is no such thing as a female goblin in that world.

If one takes this as to mean rape is ok... then that person is probably an idiot who would've resorted to that behavior with or without shows like this.

Also the rape and stuff pretty much ends from this point on. You think Goblin Slayer is gonna let anybody else get raped while he's around? The rest of the series is him enacting absolute massacre on every goblin he sees. The rapes etc were more or less cannon fodder, as sad as it sounds.

I mean what does that add to a story other than getting perverts off? Who wants to see that.

In Dragonball Z the Freeza forces probably raped people before destroying their worlds. We never saw it.

I mean Dragon Age was an 18 rated game and in the plot they explain that the Darkspawn are made by horrible monsters kidnapping, torturing and gang-raping girls, then forcing them to eat their boyfriends. But they didn't SHOW us that in graphic detail.

Mind you, I just read the first chapter online after seeing this topic, but I think the graphic assault and violence is sort of the point. It starts off as a happy priest joining an adventurer's guild and joins up with another novice group of a monk, fighter, and mage who are going to take out a goblin camp. Goblins are said to have the strength and intelligence of a child, so it's just an amateur task that they're sure they can handle. Given this topic, I'm sure you can guess what happens to 'em.

I don't know how the rest of the story plays out, but the first chapter is deliberately setting up expectations of it being a light-hearted D&D-type manga with the confident, up-beat fighter, the shy, chaste healer, the tsudnere mage, and that monk who I forgot the details of. The gratuitous violence and sexual assault (which isn't outright shown but it's very clear that's what's happening) then subverts those expectations.

There's nothing about it that anyone would probably be getting off to unless they have some very specific preferences.

It was really over the top. I don't like it when anime feel exploitative in their shock. Like, the grossness of Berserk makes a lot of sense narratively speaking. This just felt a little over the top. I mean, you actively watch the priestess piss herself as others around her are being raped.

It's a shame how over the top it was cause I liked the character design and the general "idea" of it, plus the more realistic approach to fighting it has. (The Goblin Slayer made a big enemy come down a narrow pathway that he set up a tripline. Big enemy fall down, he stabs it through the neck for the kill).

But if all that is going to prefaced by rookie characters going out and getting raped? Nah, I don't want to see that.

Liked the manga. Appreciate the strategic approach to the combat scenes rather than the usual gung-ho, kick-down-the-front-door-and-fuck-thinking route.

It's not about just whether you're depicting rape. It's about depicting it with meaning and not to seem exploitative or indulgent.

So I watched the scene from the first episode where the initial party gets wrecked and it is pretty indulgent in how they're depicting that one character (out of three who get killed) singled out for being raped, including the fact that there is another female character who just gets stabbed and dies. The character in question was given the most thought in their design, the most obvious "figure", and then every shot of her having every last bit of her clothes ripped off and was showing her very clean and pristine skin underneath, giving us a considerable view of her naked body.

That's not what actual rape looks like. That's just a rape fantasy in animated form.

Also, for those citing Game of Thrones, GoT has also been called out for being exploitative in how it depicts rape, so it's not like it got a full pass or anything.

It's one thing to use rape to make it seem like shit's seriously fucked, but it's another to frame it like a hentai. In my opinion, Goblin Slayer is doing the latter in an attempt to get away with the former.

There are so many other ways they could show that this is not a typical happy fantasy world. Just one example off the top of my head is that they could show the goblins eating their prey.

Actually the other dying girl was going to be raped too, it didn't show it very well. In the manga it was pretty clear.

This always strikes me as so disingenuous an argument. In one breath it's "it's just fiction don't take it too seriously" and in the next they complain about their favorite movie/comic/anime/TV show being ruined by... oh... say... "the SJWs". I mean, which is it?

Of course fiction matters. We put deep emotional investment in it as a society. We see ourselves mirrored in the fiction we make. We're posting on a video game message board, a medium devoted to giving us all fantastic interactive experiences. We should be the last people who say that "it doesn't matter, don't take it too seriously", quite frankly.

I'm not saying "never depict rape". I'm saying "think about it before you do and for God's sake could you try and NOT make it look sexy?"

I think it's trying to playfully captilize on the outcry, by combining one form of hentai genre that is not as popular, with a very common western-rpg archetype anime setting.

I mean we have seen this before a TON of times, but most of those show know exactly what they are.

This feels more like a Wizardry*Beserk + Rape as Drama - Hardcore depictions. Like the show realizes that if the Goblins didn't brutally rape women, then there would really be no show...
