maybe. i still think it's totally insane for a grown man to act like the way he acted towards me. i mean, i know people i dislike in real life too. the mature thing to do is to ignore them (which is incredibly easy to do on a message board), not shout "YOU UNREASONABLE ASSHOLE" to their faces.

also, i haven't argued with him all that much - he usually stays out of political debates and for a long time he didn't post on the board at all. if he's already that impatient with me after a handful of debates that's pretty fucking weird too. and i've seen him lash out like this against other users as well, so i know his behavior isn't limited to arguments with me.

Also, were you attacking him for his opinions, or attacking his opinions?

i attacked his opinions. i remember i attacked a baseless claim he made about the left being unreasonable about gun control in some way, though i don't remember what he said specifically that i attacked. i've archived the topic so i could look it up.

So, there's a bunch of people here who talk about ignoring people a lot, but don't seem to know how to do it. Oh yeah, not to really get back into this but even though I very much think Kavanaugh should not be confirmed and think theres a very high chance that the Ford and Ramirez allegations are true (less sure with Swetnick), its very much possible to not think that someone is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (or any other standard) without thinking the person making the allegation is a liar. Youre just saying that youre not confident enough Im who is telling the truth to carry out the consequences of guilt.

As Ive argued previously, for denying a Supreme Court seat I dont think that standard should be beyond a reasonable doubt, or even a preponderance of the evidence, but its not logically inconsistent to just say that there isnt enough evidence to definitively conclude what happened either way.

Thatcher won in 79 and was in power for nearly 20 years in the UK. The Tories have been the majority party here since 2010. Quick search tells me 30 of the last 50 years, Britain have been run by conservatives. America is also roughly a 30/20 split.

Ah okay. Still, it feels like someone like Trump would be nowhere near ruling office in most other developed nations. Doesn't help that American democracy doesn't work like any other.

There's also the whole deal of how most of America's population is clustered around small areas with vast empty spaces, which is quite a deal different from most European nations I'd have to imagine (then again I live in Ireland, and yet I'm writing this as if I'm foreign to Europe).

Oh and stupid Dave Cullen went around dissing modern left-wing governments as "authoritarian" based on incidents like right-wing reporters being arrested in Britain. Like, that's not good, but that word brings to mind far worse.

The right and politics in general is sort of a different beast in Britain/Europe than it is in the US.

Like Hillary Clintons policies put her more in the camp of the Liberals than the Tories or Labour and the Liberals are sort of a smaller party there.

Several Labour tendencies are far more Trumpian, for example the nativist and anti free trade rhetoric of Corbyn isnt too far off from Trump.

What you're concerned about is social policy and even that is all over the map in Europe's politics. Angela Merkel literally was elected by the socially conservative party of Germany but has overseen the legalization of gay marriage and has been instrumental in the repeal of certain abortion restrictions. Hell shes a conservative in favor of a high rate of taxation to keep the deficit low.

I don't see the Dems winning Tennessee or Texas, so I think it is impossible for them to do it, essentially.

They *could* flip Nevada and Arizona, and *might* hold on to the rest (even though Missouri seems unlikely to me) but with what is a pretty obvious ND loss I don't see the numbers anywhere. 538 has them down to like 25% and the most likely outcome statistically based on current polling is no change.

No change though is huge for Trump because Corkers gone, Flakes gone, and McCain died. Those were 3/5 that ever stood up to Trump in any way at all. Now basically you need a defection from Murkowski and Collins every time for the Dems to stop anything in the Senate.

This is the most worrisome thing. The Republican Party puts party before country every time, and will blindly follow Trump no matter what he does. What's really sad is that we NEED more politicians who say "You know what, I don't care about re-election. I'm going to do the right thing." Which term limits would help a lot.

The MS special will not get weird and a Republican will win the run off by 15+ points.

Bredesen could maybe possibly pull it off as he tends to poll within 5, but I really think that race swings to the R closer to election (based on some interesting analysis I read at 538) so I think that race will be close-ish but a fairly safe R victory.

I think the Dems have a real shot in Nevada and Arizona though. It's surprising because of how good a candidate the R's got in Arizona but every poll I've seen so far has Sinema up.

In terms of vulnerable Dems, I'd say Heitkamp is toast, and then it probably goes McCaskill > Nelson > Donnelly > Tester. Manchin is an outside chance too, but he's so much safer than the rest that if he loses its pretty much a doomsday scenario for Dems any way.

He says four people sit at a table. And there are three cups of beer in a triangle. And then the shooter tries to get a quarter in a cup, and if he does, the person closest to the cup has to drink the beer.

How does that work if there's three cups but 4 people? There'd either be a cup that's equal distance between two people, or one person would be closest to two cups while another is closest to none.

Id say that completely depends on whether the run off ends up being for Democratic seat 49, 50 or 51 and on whether McDaniel finishes ahead of Hyde-Smith.

As for Heitkamp yeah this move would need to unexpectedly play well for her for her to win.

But if the Democrats defend the rest of the map while picking up seats in AZ and NV and we wind up with a Democratic House and a 50/50 Senate I think we could see some Republicans with presidential ambitions start taking the entire process hostage in the Senate, especially if Trump dips back below 40% after this Kavanaugh business concludes.

Can they do that if there's a 50-49 majority against on the Senate Floor? Like if the Dems invoked the nuclear option on counting the votes right away.... I mean Trump could just renominate him and they could just vote again when he gets back I guess but there would be another round of foot dragging by Dems of course.
