I don't understand it.

The phones' screens are like 5 or 6 inches. You don't need that high of a resolution on a screen so small.

To me that's just a waste of computing and graphical power.

Right now I'm using a phone that has an 854 x 480 resolution. Yeah, it's crappy, but it gets the job done. I think something like 720p or so would be more than enough for a phone. I mean, I get it, higher resolutions will look better but they can use that power for something else rather than a resolution bump.

1440p is too much for a phone. I had an iMac that was 1440p and that was awesome. The screen was 27 inches though. Who the hell needs 1440p on a 5-7 inch screen? I think there are 4K phones out now? wtf.

You don't understand it because you're ignoring the distance factor. DPI matters significantly more than resolution, especially when you factor in a short viewing distance.

You tend to have your phone a few inches from your eyes. Your computer monitor is probably 1-2 feet from your eyes. Your TV is probably 10 feet from your eyes. That's the distance factor.

1080p on a phone looks significantly sharper than 1080p on a TV precisely because the phone has a much higher DPI. You definitely do not want the low DPI of a TV on your phone. It would look horrible. It would look horrible because you view the phone from a few inches away compared to the 10 feet you view the TV.

In summary, the same resolution on different size screens results in different DPIs. Low DPIs look horrible when viewed close up.

I usually watch 360p video on my phone and not notice a big difference from watching it on normal tv. BUT then I put it on 1080p holy crap... everything is super clear.

Pixel Density actually matters more the closer you are to the screen.

So while it's true that the screen isn't that big, you're also looking at it very closely.

720p to 1080p I don't notice a difference on my s7 edge. Same with 1080p to 1440p.

But 720p to 1440p I notice a little clean up.

You use those higher resolution phones with those vr viewers. Since they have such higher resolutions you won't notice the pixels as much.
