Also, you do know the southern accent is actually the one that still most closely resembles the English accents we used to have under British rule, that they now have over there today. The more you know.

Everything in blue on this map, apart from Maryland and Delaware are still considered southern.

Missouri is a weird situation. It's both Midwestern and southern. Geographically it's Midwestern. It's above the Mason Dixon line, yet it was a confederate state, and to this day is more of a southern state than a Midwestern one despite being geographically Midwestern. The eastern and southern sides of the state are decidedly southern, the western and Northern parts are Midwestern. Missouri makes no sense. I grew up there lol.

the South historically was settled by poorer people of European descent predominantly mainly from GB and the Ulster region of Ireland (though sizable populations also came from France and Germany and other parts of modern day Western European states), boosted up by a huge imported African population sent to work as slaves, the region has been among the most politically unstable regions in American society due to the colorful Serf/Lordship governing style favored by much of her ruling class thus leading to some of the worst disaprities in American society and the rest of the Republic often shaking her head at the region because of this.

While I do like to remind folks that there are good people down here too, the stereotypes apply to a lot if not most of the population.

As for accents, anywhere I've been throughout the south I've come into a wide array of different accents that I couldn't really apply to one specific region besides the southern Louisiana accent. Anywhere in the south you could go up to 10 different people and get 10 different accents.

Look at what I just posted. Maryland and Delaware are no longer considered southern, and Missouri is a mess.

I like this one:

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/which-states-are-in-the-south/

First, the Southerners were considerably more certain of which states are their own. While the top few Midwest states barely pulled 80 percent of the vote, nearly 90 percent of respondents identified Georgia and Alabama as Southern, and more than 80 percent placed Mississippi and Louisiana in the South. South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and North Carolina all garnered above 60 percent.

Southerners seem remarkably content to mess with Texas, giving it 57 percent support. Virginia, Arkansas and Kentucky hovered at about 50 percent.

Also, Maryland well and truly is not a Southern state, according to actual Southerners. It pulled a pathetic 6 percent of the vote. Thats worse than Arizona and New Mexico. Walter White is more Southern than a Marylander. Allow me to welcome you to the North, Maryland. Ive always loved your well-appointed Interstate 95 rest stops!

Consistent with a tradition of skepticism of the federal government, the South further disagrees with the census designation of whats in the South. In addition to Maryland, Oklahoma and West Virginia both pulled less than 25 percent support, despite the fact that the census says theyre the South. Take that, big government.

these results were surprising to me actually. WV largley isn't considered southern, which does fit historically with the whole pro union thing, but I perceive it was a pretty southern state. Just interesting to see the different thoughts on it

Ive been all across the country myself and worked several jobs where I get to hear pretty much every accent available. The differences in southern accents arent really that distinguishable and I guarantee the majority of southerners dont know or care about the subtle differences. They all stretch their words. The only notable different southern accent is Cajun.
