As Dumbledore says he cannot move against Grindelwald, the trailer shows Law uncovering the franchises famous Mirror of Erised, which shows the user their deepest desire. As Rowling previously revealed, Dumbledores desire just so happens to be the young Grindelwald he fell in love with when the two were both teenagers. Laws Dumbledore is also transformed into his younger self for a brief moment, and the two characters join hands on opposite sides of the mirror while looking intensely at each other.

Jude Law and Johnny Depp should have a really long scene with them making out. They could be totally going at it, crank up the sounds, have the camera like a few inches from their faces, but then you feel bad because Depp's character doesn't give up being a criminal.

More specifically, his sister was killed when he, his brother, and Grindelwald got into a fight. So he probably shouldn't have Grindelwald as his deepest desire.

First movie was very fun, but I can't help but worry that the actual beasts themselves are gonna take even further a backseat this time around.

Good on them. Dunno if I'd be interested in the sequel as much though, since Kowalski was the best thing about the first one and they probably won't be bringing him back.

I'm gonna try and put my finger on something that bugs me, but it's difficult for me to describe properly, bear with me.
A lot of the time I see people voice these kinds of reservations about things when a story progresses. How what we're now seeing isn't consistent with what we saw before. And a lot of the time (not always, TLJ Luke is a good example of when not), to me it feels like rather than being inconsistent, we just learn more. Like, in this case we learn more of Dumbledore as a character, that his love for Grindelwald was really strong. But a lot of the time people prefer to criticize the author or point out inconsistency, rather than accept that the character didn't turn out the way the expected. (so I think your assertion that it's weird is a bit premature)

Besides, what he desired was a young Grindelwald, no? So that could very well mean that his strongest desire was to go back in time to before Grindelwald turned evil and did those horrible things, i.e., longing for a time he could never return to. And by the time the Harry Potter books come along, he's dealt with those emotions regarding Grindelwald, but of course still misses his family.

Or it could be that the mirror shows what you want at that moment. Sending Newt against Grindelwald would have stirred up memories and feelings that Dumbledore had come to terms with or buried, and he might be thinking about how differently things could have gone.

Then of course, in his later years, once he's come to terms with the fact that he and Grindelwald never really had a chance, he would be more focused on his family.
