I get the joke, but... freemium.

One of the great tragedies of the modern gaming era is that Fortnite has probably made more money than any of the best-selling games of all time. It's the same reason why companies like EA are making more than 50% of their annual profits from microtransactions, and thus are so keen to sacrifice anything and everything in order to turn every game they product into a "live service" rather than a game.

When gaming left the arcades and entered our living rooms, we left behind the need to constantly feed quarters into every game - and now publishers have figured out a way to put the leash back on.

It didn't sell at first which is why the physical game is so valuable.

They just did what Rocket League did. A decent game that costs nothing to play is going to attract people. If enough players stick around then it grows as more free content is added. For most of us it's DL and enjoy, not a dime is necessary. Fortunately for them and unfortunately for the future of gaming there are enough stupid people out there willing to pay for cosmetic items that these start making a profit.

Thankfully this kind of model won't work for every game so we don't have to worry yet. Or look at it this way - other people are paying instead of me so what do I have to complain about?

Well while the game no longer nickle and dime us. The difficultly of a lot of games was still very much in the arcade mindset.

Why does it cost that much? Was it a super limited release before they just gave it away for free?

you don't know the story of fortnite?

It didn't have battle royale for like 3 months. The game had different tier to enter (like assassin creed oddessy) and it had micro transaction to earn up faster so you can get more pve items to build your fort. The game failed miserably at launch. The progression was super slow and not that many people enjoyed the game. So they added the battle royale mode about 2 or 3 month later and made it free. Now the physical disc goes for like $500 and it just the pve game on the disc and you have to download the rest. it's just for collector that are trying to collect ever physical copy of ps4 or xbox one game .
