I tolerate them; normally you'd only interact with the cops if you did something (or were accused of doing something) wrong or had called them because somebody else did something wrong, which means that most interactions won't be happy ones. If I'm out walking at night, sometimes cops will roll up and ask questions. Sometimes when I've parked near a Pokestop or gym at night, cops will roll up, ask questions, run my plates, and then tell me to leave. And once or twice I guess I stood near a Pokestop too long during the day too long and a cop rolled up and asked questions.

Oh, three or four years ago the cops helped me open my car when my keys had fallen out of my pocket. I had to wait like half an hour for an officer to show and it took them like 10 or 15 minutes, but I guess no matter who I called I'd probably have to wait.

Though I also wish they'd spend more time solving important crimes like theft and murder than minor drug charges and especially speed traps.

...setting speed traps helps to prevent deaths. Plus those are different departments anyway and, when cops do their jobs well, they prevent more murders than they get stuck solving.

Well Link...gonna be brief but i still belive he did nothing wrong. Our belief(mine and his as hes been calling often) is that somebody in the family or a family friend did it and my friend is being used as a scapegoat. Police still seem to have no evidence. Trial is set for november and while things could change between now and then...this should go his way.

More or less what men can expect from the criminal justice system. And, even if they have no evidence, his gender might be evidence enough since men are far more likely to convicted of a crime than women.

Problem with police as with many professions is that it's not particularly well paying for what you have to put up with. Which means you don't have many people who are just doing it as a means to pay the bills; You just have people who do it because they really believe in it and people who do it because they want something the job provides other than the money.
The latter in this case being control and authority. So in a way the job is selecting people with a superiority complex and people who want to have guns and wear an outfit. People who are the exact opposite personality types that you want to have doing exactly that job. I like to think there are more police who fall into the category of wanting to upholding the law than not. But the good ones don't do enough to police (haw) the assholes among them who don't belong.

The police pay pretty generously and have great benefits. They're eligible for their pension at age 55 whereas most people can't afford to retire until at least 65.

ReturnOfFa posted...
I generally dislike the police, seeing as the requirements to get into the force aren't stringent enough.

Given that one of my cousins has tried to get into the police force for close to a decade, I'd say that their requirements are pretty strict (or there aren't many available jobs).

I grew up in a town where the cops mostly confiscated weed from minors/young adults without writing tickets, AKA taking said weed for their own consumption.

Would you have liked the ticket or jail time?

Despise them. For several reasons. The primary reason being the extortion that they commit on such a regular basis. Fines for the sake of satisfying quotas in order to generate revenue for the state=extortion.

lol...

One night we're at a party, we are all of age, and two people get in a fight over a girl. We call the cops. So the cops get there and immediately start drawing their weapons on everyone and forcing us all into a circle where they search us at gunpoint. When we called them to help us. My one friend was passed out and not waking up quickly enough, so a cop felt it necessary to hold his eye open and pepper spray him directly on the eye ball from an inch away.

Sounds like absolute bullshit. Hell, even the part about you calling the cops to intervene in a fight -- something people at a party usually break up themselves -- kinda sounds like bullshit.

BADoglick posted...
And civil asset forfeiture is quite literally a racket used to steal money from people before they are even convicted.

Not a cop problem, that's a law problem.

BADoglick posted...
Yet I never see any 'good cops' saying 'hey maybe we shouldn't kill so many dogs, beat our wives, or steal money from people who haven't been convicted.

lolwut? If you think that about cops, I can't imagine what you think about minorities.

BADoglick posted...
Maybe we shouldn't stick up for off duty officers who commit premeditated murder by slapping them on the wrists and intentionally failing to fully investigate them?

Sounds like you're deliberately fudging an event, but I'll let you cite your examples.

BADoglick posted...
My gf and I were in a car accident. We call 911. Cops response 'Is your car driveable and you're not seriously injured? Ok then clear the debris yourself' *click*

Bullshit. Cops will drive out to accidents even when there's no visible damage to either vehicle. I've been no-damage accidents where dispatch insisted that a cop look things over anyway.

BADoglick posted...
We also had three men try to break into our house the night before Thanksgiving at 3 am. So I call the cops. Their response? "Did they get in? No? Ok call us when they do".

Not sure what you were expecting them to do. Drive around and question anybody they see walking?

Maybe we shouldn't rehire officers that were fired from other departments for unethical practices?' 'Good' cops won't cross that thin blue line in order to purge their bad apples, so in my opinion that means 'good' cops don't exist. A few bad apples ruin the bunch, and they'd rather stew with some rotten apples than maintain their integrity.

Like I said, 99% make the rest look bad.

How? Seems like having visible enforcement of speeding would be much more effective

You're not wrong, people assume enforcement isn't in place if they don't see it.

I know a few cops and other people in law enforcement, and it's worse than you can imagine (at least in the US). Police forces tend to avoid hiring those with a high IQ, as they're more likely to countermand orders, and do things that result in a lot more paperwork and trouble with the city. They want people who will follow orders and not report misdeeds. Even if you don't get nothing but hamfisted morons on the force, there are two major issues with corruption. Internal corruption, where if you report any of it, you are pretty much done as a cop, if not worse, and the personal corruption. This is when your only interactions with people outside of your friends and family are people who are breaking the law, usually in a dangerous way. Police training is bad enough with every officer being having the idea that every suspect is a ninja terrorist drilled into them, but to have that idea reinforced through constant experience? If every time you ran into a person of a particular ethnicity, they were hurting or robbing someone, would you maintain a positive impression of the majority?

Same as any other person with a job. They serve a purpose but are human and as such subject to making mistakes or in some cases letting personal bias effect their decisions. The latter just needs to have a zero tolerance type of thing put on them

its also really catchy when you remove every other beat

This so much. You arent a good cop when you when you remain silent and turn a blind eye and passively or actively take part in rampant corruption.

Imo anyone who swears to enforce or uphold BS laws isn't a good person. Ie all cops.

I can get behind actual policing. What I have a problem with is the militarization of police forces post-9/11 and this warrior cop mentality. I also have a problem with profit motivated policing, but those APCs and SWAT teams for every Podunk town aren't going to pay for themselves...
