Do the mobile versions run well? Only one I've ever beaten was X a long time ago on PS2.

I see that I through IX are all available on the Google Play store, except VIII which is oddly absent.

Are they all worth playing? Do characters from earlier games ever make appearances in later games?

Looking for CE's recommendations.

Good ones to play are 4-7, 9-10, and 15. Final Fantasy has no continuity except for direct sequels, but the games obviously do share some things in common (spell names, summons, and Cid). The only mobile versions that aren't garbage (to my knowledge) are 3 and 4, and only because they're ports of DS games. You're going to want to play pretty much any Final Fantasy that isn't 3 or 4 in a remade or remastered form. I'd recommend starting off with 4, given you haven't experienced the ATB system, but be warned that the 3D (DS and mobile) versions are hard as diamond and WILL kick your ass.

This too, Chrono Trigger fits in pretty well with Final Fantasy and is much better than most of the series. Also play Cross afterwards, if you get the chance.

IV - X-2, XII - XIII-2 and XV are all worth playing

XIV is the better mmo of the two, but that's probably not what you're looking for

though you may as well get ff15 as 1. it's newest, and 2. it's a very good intro to the series. it's a good game too, and it has an action oriented combat system as opposed to a turn based.

6, 7, and X are my personal favs, and are pretty good starting points.

If you like job systems, V is a fuck ton of fun. Story is a little on the weaker side though.

While X-2 isn't exactly bad in my eyes, it's almost as weak an entry as FF5.

Don't play the original XII, it's a piece of garbage. Play the Zodiac Age version instead, it transfroms onw of the worst games in the series into one of my top 5. Skip the XIII trilogy and the MMOs. If you want a good taste of the series at it's best, play VI. If you want to experience what all the fuss is about, play VII, but you have to keep in mind the graphics are incredibly dated, so you kind of have to imagine what it would have been like to play it back in the day. If you want to play the best classic FF, play IX.

There's a good reason why VIII isn't on phones and a port wasn't announced for the Switch and XBO. Skip it.

A lot of it is technical, they are pretty much the same game story-wise.

On the gameplay side of things, in the original every character is the same gameplay-wise. In the Zodiac Age, you have to choose up to 2 classes for every character to specialize in, which dictates their equipment and skills and makes the game more fun imo. Also, the maps in the game are big, but there's not much going on. In the remake, there's the option to make thing go 2 times or 4 times faster, which aleviates the problem and makes battles go faster if you want.

On the technical side, due to the PS2 RAM, casting endgame spells was detrimental to you, since your characters would not cast any other spells until the animation for the first spell ended, but your enemies could still attack you. This problem is gone in The Zodiac Age. They also raised the damage cap from 9,999 to 99,999 (I'm not actually sure about this number, but I never reached more than 30k damage in my playthrough), which makes certain endgame and optional bosses more tolerable.

You can play most of the series on Steam, but DO NOT PLAY V and VI in there. Those versions are insulting, you're better of tracking a copy of V for the GBA, and honestly, just choose for VI: SNES, GBA or SNES classic. The audio quality in the GBA version is lower, but it is by no means a dealbreaker. Do not play the PS1 versions of V and VI, the load times are insufferable and kick in every time you so much as go into a menu.
