Alice in Chains and The Offspring.

Dirt and Smash are the best grunge albums of all time.

Love them all, but today I listen to more Alice in Chains out of the bunch. Chris Cornell is my favourite singer of the bunch, RIP.

Alice in Chains > Soundgarden > Pearl Jam > Nirvana

But in terms of live shows it's Pearl Jam #1.

Nirvana with Pearl Jam a very close 2nd.

Never really cared for AiC's "sludge sound" that they have.
Could be why i like Jar of Flies EP so much.

Same. I'm a little surprised at all the Nirvana votes.

Nirvana, then Pearl Jam

I walked into a liquor store in Princeton once wearing a Nirvana shirt and one of the workers made some snooty comment about how they bet I never saw them live. And like no shit? I was a kid when Cobain killed himself. I still remember my cousin coming over and she was crying her eyes out over it.

Anyways I left because the prices were too high, not just because he was a jerk.

How so? The man still runs around stage swinging off of shit he shouldn't be like he's in his 20s.

That's cool and all, but he is indeed the worst of the 4.

That doesn't mean he sucks, it just means he's not as good as Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, or Kurt Cobain. That's in no way an insult, and in fact I see it as a compliment that he can be compared to those 3.

Vedder is great, just not GOAT material.

That's fair. I'm just not sure what qualities you're describing when you mention the term frontman.

AiC > Nirvana > Soundgarden > Pearl Jam

All good but their amount of good material goes down as you go down the list. AiC is strong on almost all of their albums. Bleach sucks outside of four songs, Pre-Badmotorfinger SG pretty much doesn't exist, Pearl Jam is very limited post-Ten

But they've all made some amazing music regardless.

IDK, I always had a hard time getting deeper into their stuff, I need to fix that though.

I randomly stumbled across Audioslave once a few years ago and fell in love with their first album. but didn't find out till later when I was really starting to get into the genre that it was also Chris Cornell.

Pearl Jam is legitimately one of the worst bands of all time, they are essentially Americas answer to U2

Hmm...

It may come down to my perception...

When I think grunge I think the lower pitched, grindy, melodic, often bass-heavy sound that Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, STP, AiC, etc are known for. PJ never really had that, or at least not often.

I feel like PJ definitely had that, like, in the majority of their songs. They've only really strayed from that a bit in their more recent stuff. Their first 2 albums especially had that vibe and sound.

I'll try to check out some more of their older stuff if that's the case :)

Tbf I've never been a big Pearl Jam guy, never disliked them by any means, but never really sought them out either, so almost everything I know from them was just what was played on the radio.

Songs like Jeremy, I'm Still Alive, Evenflow, Black, etc. never really had the sound I described, but I admit I have a weird take on most musical genrefication (that's not a word).

It's still quite a bit of songs that I DO know, (about a dozen and a half songs or so that I can think of right now), but I'm sure there are tons of more "grungy" songs I'm not aware of.

I'll be so pissed if PJ turns out to be one of my favorite bands after 2.5 decades of "they're alright"...

Ten and Vs. are probably my all time favorite albums. Vitalogy is really good too, but it's a little more hit or miss to me.

Then there's individual songs I love from their later stuff, like Do The Evolution.

BackSpacer is also great, its only flaw is it feels too short.
