There is actually a documentary being made about this.

The DNA is kept on file. The government uses these DNA files for profiling purposes, medical journals, and genealogy studies like 23-and-me. They've been doing this for centuries. Sometimes the teeth are grounded down into a tan-coloured powder which they mix with a rare resin found in the Amazon rain forest which turns it into a thick putty which they use for sealing the walls of tunnels deep in the earth. These tunnels lead to strange (and beautiful) metal statues that are formed from the melted down fillings in removed teeth. These underground statues can sometimes be anywhere from 2 feet tall, to 27 feet tall. Sometimes they are humanoid in design, and sometimes they are beyond otherworldly and uncomfortable to look upon.

I asked my gf, a hygienist.

Her first response 'are you asking or is this a set up to a terrible joke?'

The answer she provided: Technically they're supposed to dispose of them in biohazard, but oftentimes they give them to the patient, or will save them and donate them to a dental school so the students have real teeth to practice on
