The problem isn't the change in ethnicity. Zendaya is a beautiful young woman and could've made for a great Mary Jane Watson. The problem is they deliberately chose to downgrade her looks and make her more of a social outcast.

Hollywood can't shield their bad decisions by attaching them to progressive ones. If an idea stinks, it stinks.

And, yes, the MJ quip is meant to signify that she's this universe's version of Mary Jane Watson. It's just like the guy in Iron Man 3 not being the "real" Mandarin. Until the real one shows up, the imposter who bares their name (or in MJ's case, initials) is that series' version of the character.

The Ultimate universe version of Mary Jane Watson should've never been a thing. You can't just write the inverse of a character and say that it's a proper adaptation.

I love how Marvel went from broke as fuck with most of their big heroes sold to others but now they are a titan and have been reclaiming the stuff they had to sell off.

MCU proves you can go from we fuck this up we are finished to we are the master of the connected/shared universe, and master of the after credits scene while keeping that high quality.

So, Zendaya is looking her best with dyed red hair as Mary Jane Watson. And Peter is college age instead of being stuck in high school after every reboot. Do I see Homecoming? Sure. Do I see the next Marvel movie after that? Maybe, maybe not. Spider-Man 2, I'd see.

There's still the issue of over-saturation. It's hard to maintain interest in something that's been going on so long when the characters I care about have been in four to six movies and the forthcoming characters don't interest me.

Will I be hyped for Infinity War 3? Absolutely not. Marvel's X-Men? Maybe. Marvel's Fantastic 4? Again, maybe. I don't care about Captain Marvel. I don't care about Iron Man 4. The franchise might not have run its course, but I have.

Considering his origin was skipped over I'm not sure how his age makes that much of a difference for you. I'm pretty sure we've had more movies outside of high school than in high school for Spidey at this point.

it wasnt even a thing I thought when I was watching it on release night. when I heard her say MJ my thought process was "hey I get that small reference to the actual MJ!" Seeing the faux outrage over it is fun though, especially when it's been confirmed by God Fiege himself that Zendaya is not MJ

How stupid do you think people are to say that "MJ" is not Mary Jane? Like, oh, that makes it okay that we've written Mary Jane Watson out of the story in favor of a replacement character who happens to have the same initials?

She's still the stand-in. For all intents and purposes, she's that universe's version of Mary Jane. Just like how Eckart was the Tim Burton Batman's replacement for Bullock or how Detective Ramirez was The Dark Knight's version of Renea Montoya.

They don't have to be a 1 to 1 adaptation of that character, but they're still filling in for them. If the real Mary Jane shows up, I'll shut up about Homecoming. Just like I'll shut up about Iron Man 3 when the real Mandarin shows. We both know neither of those things are ever going to happen, so saying their not the "real" character is a shit excuse.

Even if it is MJ who cares? Traditionally Peter doesn't meet MJ in high school. He meets her from a blind date. So her character during that period can be a blank slate. She's not grown up yet.

You're so weirdly rigid about the dumbest shit. It's still early days for that character. She's barely even in Homecoming. This isn't the same case for Mandarin who have a completed story. Characters like Ramirez and Bullock barely matter.

Mary Jane can provide more to the story than being eye candy for the audience.

She was literally written to be Renea, but they changed the name due to how the character was portrayed.

Okay, to be fair, I'd rather go the Eckart/Ramirez route than ruin a character. But that does still leave Mary Jane absent. Going back to Batman, it's okay to get by without Montoya or Bullock. But if you replaced the Joker with "The Jester" or Catwoman with "Felina," I'd be pretty annoyed.

And even getting past the whole Mary Jane issue, there's still the whole over-saturation thing. I've never found Thanos to be an interesting villain, so the story arc surrounding him doesn't appeal to me much. And as for the heroes, they're a bit overexposed as well.

I'm more interested in what DC is going to do because I haven't seen those characters ad nauseum. It's possible to be a fan of something and still feel like it's been overdone. Case in point, I think Disney is biting off too much with Star Wars.

If you're going to whine about being 'traditional' the role Aunt May will play in future movies has a much more significant impact than whatever they do with MJ.

Vulture is also nothing really like his comic book counterpart.
