I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. They made strides to make FF15 somewhat enjoyable... mind you this was after I had already finished the game. Though I will agree that their FF9 port was very lacking, and it took modders to actually make the game look good.

the junction system, the level scaling (ie non existent difficulty even with 0 junction and 1 character runs) and plot pacing (talk to 7 characters IN A SPECIFIC ORDER AND LEAVE THE TRAIN YOU JUST ENTERED TO CONTINUE THE PLOT) need major overhauls

IIRC in VIII leveling up is a disadvantage and so is using any of your stored magic..plus you can make the characters op in like 5 mins?

If they changed all that I'd be down, I liked the game enough till all that was so obvious :/

I didn't care for the junction and level scaling, as it seemed needlessly complicated/unfinished. Think it literally punished you for leveling. Had a cousin who basically power grinded on the first island outside of balamb till around level 40 and wouldn't even do Dollet till I was like "why". Then all I heard was the local folk trash on 8 and how glorious 7 was.

As for story, I actually liked the story outside of maybe 1 or 2 spots where it becomes a stretch.

Didn't feel the same for 7... just didn't really grab me outside of nanaki's sweet red ass.

They're porting the X/X-2 remaster. They were sold together in that version.

Just looked up the announcement now, holy shit. I already have FFX/X-2 on PS3, haven't played it yet but I'm getting there (have played the games in the past though) - but FF9 and World of Final Fantasy are must-buys for me. I have the PS1 classic for FF9, but it was pretty rough getting through the PAL version - hopefully 9 is a less tedious experience when it runs at a faster pace.

There is a reason why FF7 only has two songs in Smash Ultimate, when theres over 800 songs total in the game

There's nothing wrong with being passionate about something you love. We can both agree some of the radicals take it too far, but as a FF fan.. speaking out against some poor decision making and discussing it with other fans...there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm not a big fan of VIII's story, myself, but I still find the game enjoyable, and boy I love Laguna!

My problem is that the some of the community tend to not really take in the story, and actually try to figure it out. Most times I just see the most shallow of opinions "like the game is garbage or whatever" and it certainly isn't unique to FF8, but most games that even tried to tell a long story. Even some YOUTUBE personality can basically give you a breakdown of the FF8 story, and assuming he is not a memelord douche.

I'm afraid they're just going to do the same thing for FF7 Remake, and pretty much ruin everything because of how petty they can get.

I've heard that there's a song in VIII that requires a license and that's what's holding up a re-release of it.

I don't know how true that could be given that:

1) It got re-released on Steam a few years ago.

2) FFX and X-2 have songs in them

My money is on "SE lost the source code for the PS1 version." Hell, they lost the code for the original Kingdom Hearts and had to remake it entirely for the collections.

The only good thing about FF8 is the soundtrack.

Julia(Rinoa's mother) plays the instrumental version with her piano, you first hear it at Squall / Laguna dream.

edit: i just remember that the dance scene at Seed inaugural ceremony has the speed up version.

There doesn't have to be a "the" villain. There can be multiple villains.

And yeah, the drawback was the confusing story, but what matters more to me is how a story flows. How it moves along. How the music ties to the scenery and setting. How the characters behave. Etc.

To sum it up:

The characters are cooler in FF7.
The music is better in FF7.
The sound effects are better in FF7.
The game moves along at a better pace in FF7 (battle, dialogue, load times, etc).
The magic system is way better in FF7.
The scenery is prettier in FF7.
The setting and enemies are cooler in FF7.
The process of leveling up and making your characters strong is way better in FF7.

Obviously this is just my opinion. But I played FF8 after FF7, so I feel like I was able to compare and contrast pretty well.

Also, I feel that there is a reason why FF7 is the best selling FF game of all time. FF8 is the second best selling, but only because it came out after FF7...people thought they were getting a high quality game like FF7, but didn't. That's why FF9 didn't sell nearly as well as 7 or 8...people were like "Yeah right, I played FF8 and I'm not making that mistake again".

I'd like to counter some of your points, and add some extra points.... if I may.

While 7 may have more memorable areas, 8 was known for the beauty of what areas it had. Deling City is just gorgeous, and Fishermans Horizon is just a sight to be seen the first time you enter it.

8 also dominated in the summon department compared to 7. Most of them weren't just given to you through finding them in materia, you had to physically either find/beat them, or activate an in-game event to gain them, and the ones you gain are as said in my previous point.... beautiful.

I'd also argue that 8 had just as many great scores as 7, if not more. By the time 8 came around Square was more willing to invest in great music and they really drove hard the point that 8 was far better than 7 in terms of quality of each one. Still doesn't match up to 9, but even today's games don't really match up to 9. Almost every theme in that game was a masterpiece and could still hold up to today's standards.

I also played FF8 after 7, and while I haven't ever actually beaten the game(still on my bucket list as its one of the few Final Fantasy games including 1,2,3nes,13 and 13-3) I have played up until the final disc multiple times, sadly getting distracted by another title coming out.

Also, looking into it, FF8s 20th anniversary is coming out next year. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if what I said earlier about a remaster with improved leveling system were to come true.
