by the supplemental poverty measure, not the official poverty rate, to be clear

The reason is obvious to anyone who has lived in California in the last 30 years -- the rent is too damn high

Rather, California has the highest supplemental poverty measure rate simply because of our highest-in-the-nation home prices. If housing prices in California were at the median seen across the rest of the United States, the states supplemental poverty measure rate would drop by nearly a third to 11.7 percent from 17.1 percent. California would then rank 30th among the states based on 2015 data. This might not be surprising, as 29 percent of Californians spend more than half their monthly income to keep a roof over their heads.

Still, this begs the question of whether Californias poverty rate should depend so exclusively and overwhelmingly on housing costs. It seems reasonable to assume that poor people would struggle with both food and housing costs. So, if California really has the highest poverty rate, we should expect it to also have high food insecurity.

There's only one solution for the housing problem: ban city living. All residential areas must be rural or suburban with no limits on development.

And instead of building more housing, they want to subsidize the exorbitant rent.

This is off-topic, but it really bothers me when people use "begs the question" when "raises the question" would be appropriate. Begging the question is an actual concept with an actual definition, and I hardly ever see it used correctly.

I fully expect CA in response to try to enact some sort of "living tax" on every business that charges them half of their employee's rent to help control this epidemic.

That's leftism for you. Subsidize bad behaviors, try various forms of rent control, then blame the white man or capitalists.

beg the question
phrase of beg

1. (of a fact or action) raise a point that has not been dealt with; invite an obvious question.
"some definitions of mental illness beg the question of what constitutes normal behaviour"

2. assume the truth of an argument or proposition to be proved, without arguing it.

I'm fine with rental subsidies. We should spend more on them.

We should build a hell of a lot more housing, too, though.
