Today, science tells us that the essence of nature is empathy. Consciousness consists of sonar energy of quantum energy. Quantum means a blossoming of the zero-point. You and I are seekers of the cosmos.

By flowering, we self-actualize. To walk the mission is to become one with it. The goal of electrical impulses is to plant the seeds of learning rather than stagnation.

We can no longer afford to live with discontinuity. The complexity of the present time seems to demand a refining of our hopes if we are going to survive. Dogma is the antithesis of health.

I mean, there's no such thing as "just" entertainment, and video games can always be analyzed in terms of their real-world implications. I haven't played Spider-Man yet (been busy with Dragon Quest XI), so I have no idea if the author is right about the game's content, but if you can't enjoy a video game while also recognizing any problematic cultural mores that it might serve to reinforce, then you may need to do some self-reflection.

Except the "problematic cultural mores" he's talking about is not being antagonistic to policemen...

The game has you fighting bad guys in conjunction with the NYPD, the author takes issue with helping the digital NYPD because he thinks the real NYPD are fascists and oppress actual residents of "his NYC".

I don't think it's an entirely unjustified way to feel about it, but this author really didn't put a lot of thought into the article he wrote. It kinda just feels like he's trying to hit a quota. He even admitted to not having played much of the game

How does the game portray police? Does the game represent the NYPD in a way that seems overly charitable?

They probably just portray them as guys who's job it is to keep the city safe.

Godnorgosh posted...
On the other side of things, how does the game (and a lot of media in the superhero genre generally tbh) portray crime and criminals?

As psychotic radioactive supervillains, mostly.

Godnorgosh posted...
In the game, are they generally portrayed as bad or unstable people, good people who had momentary lapses in judgment, desperate, or something else?

They're usually out for things like world domination

Godnorgosh posted...
These are the kinds of questions to ask if you want to find out what values a game, novel, film, comic, etc. is reinforcing on a cultural level.

Or maybe they're just telling an escapist story that reinforces nothing.

...So yeah, these are things to keep in mind

he's wrong, about the villains. most of the main villains (Fisk, Osborn, Mr negative and Doc ock) have nuance to their motivations where they believe they're doing the right thing but their methods of achieving it are obviously wrong since they're playing with lives

in some cases like with Fisk and Mr negative and doc ock you can see the good stuff they've done but ultimately they still have to be taken down

In what Spiderman game since N64/PS1 has Spidey not helped the NYPD? I mean it's like the reoccurring thing, especially since Spiderman 2, for side quests and random alerts. So it's just an issue now? Or is this just someone random dude on the internet bitching about a game, he himself claims, he's barely played?

And there's the rub. You either have to be one or the other. Someone can't possibly find fault in a person that is showing an absolute distasteful for the law, and not also have a balanced criticism of the law itself? It either all or nothing, eh?

I was watching a youtube video on h3h3, then a related video by the same guy talked about the review because it was funny. Deadspin is a mainstream liberal site so its not like he scowered the deep corners of the internet to be annoyed by liberal sjws.

I shared it here because I knew some people here would enjoy it too.

I dont really understand why Im not suppose to criticize liberas or liberal ideology ever

why? If you guys want to go to an SJW board, go to NeoGAF. Im not sure why some people come to gamefaqs and complain people think differently from them when there are literally other sites that ban everyone who isnt an sjw for you to go to.

If anything, it's kind of ignorant of Spider-Man as a whole to wonder why he wouldn't help the police and, if actually brought into the game, that his politics might not align fully with more extreme BLM supporters. His whole MO is he lost his uncle because he didn't stop a crook when he had a chance (originally out of pure narcissism, but later versions as he felt the guy the crook was robbing deserved it). I don't know how open he'd be to people going on about white privilege if it sounded like it would come at the expense of the uncle Bens of the world.

They have zero point.

It's a fictional game based on a super hero.

And characters such as batman have exposed the trash within the justice system. So basically what this author is saying is that the majority of NYPD is corrupt, cant be trusted and thus spiderman shouldnt associate with them by helping fight crime and bad guys?

If you're anti rules, law, authority, whatever. Fine.

But dont drag that shit into a game where you're playing as a dude in spandex with super powers.
