"No, it's okay," Raven says. "I can share this story."

Raven explains everything as she did to Rorek weeks ago. She mentions the personal journal of Rorek the First's with Malchior trapped inside, and how he spoke to her as if he were actually the wizard. Then she explained how Malchior taught her all sorts of magic, both good and evil. She explained how she fell for Malchior's manipulation, all the way to freeing him from the book. And she concludes with how she trapped him back in the book, heart broken.

After hearing the story, both Rebecca and Roselind are upset. Roselind has tears in her eyes while Rebecca clenches her fists.

"That evil monster," Rebecca says through grit teeth.

"That's so sad...!" Roselind says.

"It's okay," Raven says with a soft laugh. "I'm way over it now, because, for one, that was years ago. And also because I met your brother."

"Aww..." Roselind says. "That's so sweet."

"What did Rory do with the book?" Rebecca asks.

"Oh," Raven says. "Well, I don't have it anymore. Not too long ago, the book was stolen from me, and then Malchior was given the ability to transform back and forth, but then he ended up sealed in another dimension. So he's still out there somewhere. I don't really worry about it, I know the curse that stopped him the first time, so I could probably just use it again."

"Oh," both twins say.

"What's that 'oh' for?" Raven asks them.

"Well, what if Malchior finds his way out of that dimension at the worst possible time?" Roselind asks.

"Or if you don't actually remember the curse that well?"

"I do remember it," Raven says. "It's... Um... It ends with Nortix. I think."

Raven tries really hard to remember, but she's having a mental block.

"Well, whatever," Raven shrugs. "I'll look it up some other time. It's probably written somewhere else, like the biographical books about the Roreks."

"I suppose so," Rebecca says.

"So long as it's somewhere," Roselind says.

"But anyway, what else do you girls want to know?" Raven asks them.

"Oh, um..." Roselind says. "How about--"

"That trip you and Rory had down to Southern California," Rebecca says. "You had to share a room at a hotel, didn't you?"

"Oh, down to National City and Hollywood," Raven says. "Y-Yeah, we ended up sharing that room. Nothing happened. We had separate beds and your brother even put up a curtain of sorts for when we were getting dressed."

"Well that's quite gentlemanly of him," Roselind says.

"Did he make the first move or did you?" Rebecca asks.

"Rebecca!" Roselind scolds.

"I made the first move," Raven says. "We were watching movies, and I just leaned in. But, I wasn't the one who pushed it further. That was totally Rorek."

"Okay, we can stop talking about that subject now," Rebecca says.

"Yeah," Roselind chuckles.

"Do you have any other questions?" Raven asks them.

"Umm..." the two of them say. "Not really."

"Do you have any questions for us?" Roselind asks.

"Well, sure," Raven says.

"What is it like being able to taste magic?"

"It's very strange," Rebecca says. "There are so many different ways for magic to taste."

"We've been keeping a catalog of magic tastes since we were seven," Roselind says.

Roselind goes to her nightstand and pulls out a notebook.

"Here," she says as she presents it to Raven.

Raven takes and opens the notebook to begin reading.

"Apples and peanuts equals Barrier Magic, bacon and bananas equals Disorientation, grapes and salsa are Transformation, chocolate and eggs are Arcana, wow these are some really crazy flavor combinations."

"Yes, it's not always a good combination," Roselind says.

"Grapes and salsa are a good combination?" Raven says with a raised eyebrow.

"No, I was thinking more chocolate and eggs," Roselind says. "Grapes and salsa isn't very good at all."

"Oranges and vinegar, Druidic spirits," Raven continues. "Orange and rice, Druidic divination. Orange and black pepper, Druidic nature. Seems Druidic magics have oranges as a common theme.

"Pork and milk, Speed magic. Cheese and red peppers, Summoning. Those don't sound too bad. I've washed down bacon with milk before."

"Yes, but this would be like bacon in your milk," Rebecca says.

"Oh. That is pretty bad."

"The cheese and coconut wasn't the best, either," Roselind says.

"Right, the flavor of my time magic," Raven says.

"And then the lemon, sage, blood and dryness," Rebecca says. "That wasn't pleasant at all."

"Trust me, it was far less pleasant having to face what my father was doing," Raven says. "I'm surprised what you two tasted was that tame. I mean, the blood was one thing, but lemon and sage seems pretty tolerable."

"What would you have expected it to taste like?" Roselind asks.

"I dunno. Something spoiled rotten, that makes you want to gag or vomit."

"Thankfully we've yet to taste something like that," Rebecca says.

"Does it get annoying?" Raven asks. "Or is there something that helps keep you from tasting every spell used around you?"

"Well there is a range to our sense," Roselind says.

"Or maybe more a sensitivity," Rebecca says. "For the most part, anything we taste is a spell cast within just a few yards. But obviously your time magic spell and that whole thing with your dad was on such a level, we tasted it all the way over here."

"Wow," Raven says.

"Oh, we should get going," Roselind says. "We need to make sure we can get dressed before those hens do."

"Oh, yes, they'll flood that room and cluck at each other," Rebecca says. "Let's go!"

Raven puts the notebook on Roselind's bed as she stands up with them. The twins put the chairs away and then lead the way back to the dressing room.

You finally get your bow tie on straight, then adjust your cummberbund band around your waist before putting on your jacket. You walk out of your room, the gifts for your father wrapped and under your arm. The sound of young women chattering echoes from down the hall. You hurry to the stairs in case they might head your way.

From the stairs, you make your way outside, to where the social lunch is being held. Your parents stand in the gazebo, and are speaking with many of the other parent pairs. You see the gift table off to the side and set down your gifts.

"Happy birthday, father," you say as you walk up.

"Oh, there you are," mother says.

She gives you a hug, and then you shake hands with your father before embracing with a hug of your own.

"You got me two gifts?" he says with a smirk and raised eyebrow.

"Well, yes, but Raven shares credit for it on the card," you say.

The three of you chuckle as you turn to look out at everyone.

"It's good to have you home, son," father says.

"It's good to be home, father," you say back.

You watch the doors very closely, but none of the suitors walk out yet. You decide to take this time to ask your parents something.

"What do you think of Raven?" you ask.

"Why are you asking that?" your father asks.

"I want to know your opinions," you say. "Do you like her?"

"Of course," your father says.

"She's lovely," your mother says.

"Is that your candid opinion?"

"Of course it is," your father says. "She's so much more modest and sensible than most. Especially Renee."

"Mhm," mother hums and nods.

Both you and your father look at her.

"What?" she asks as she notices your and father's expressions.

"That sound usually means you don't actually agree," you say. "Is there something you don't like about her?"

"Do you not think she's modest?" father adds.

"No, she's modest," mother says. "In personality."

"And what is that supposed to mean?" you ask.

"Well," mother says. "With Mother Ruth busy helping Father Sixth look after Aunt Radella, I was in charge of fitting the girls for dresses. And there are obviously some... items I'd be blind not to see."

"Oh, come now," you say. "What do... those... have to do with her modesty?"

"When your sisters designed her a dress, she didn't seem to mind how much she was showing."

"How much of what she was showing?" father asks.

"Dear, I know you're trying to be polite," mother says, "but as a man, I'd expect you to know what I mean."

You hear a commotion coming from the door, and you look over. The suitors file out, Renee leading the way, Roxanne just behind. Renee has her head held high as she parades out in front of all the families. But you look and see Raven pulling up the rear. You hurry over, and you start to see what your mother means.

"Raven!" you say in surprise. "My, my. I suppose this is what mother meant."

"Oh," Raven says with a slight blush. "So she told you?"

"Yes, and I'm certainly not one to complain," you say. "Let's go say hello."

You take Raven's hand and lead her over to

"Good afternoon, Mr. Null," Raven says. "And hello again, Mrs. Null."

"Afternoon, Raven," your father says.

"Hello again, Raven," your mother smiles.

Then your mother shoots you a glance of "See?" You sigh while Raven is a bit confused.

"This is really nice," Raven says a bit nervously as she motions to everything. "I didn't realize there was such creativity in monochrome."

"Thank you," father says. "I'm rather proud of them myself."

"Oh, you designed these yourself?" she says. "Wow, that's pretty great."

"Thank you," he says again. "Which part is your favorite?"

"Well, I really like this gazebo," she says. "It's rare to see them so big and round."

"Is it really?" mother asks, clearly meaning to imply a double meaning.

You shoot your mother a glance asking her to please stop.

"Are they not as common in Azarath?" father asks, not picking up on your mother's shenanigans.

"No, gazebos weren't really part of architecture in Azarath," Raven says, not picking up on it, either.

"Speaking of Azarath," mother asks. "What is your mother like? We didn't really circle back to her while talking about your heritage. What is she like as a person?"

"She's very serious, and can be a bit gloomy. I know that kinda describes me, so maybe that's where I get it from."

"Did you get... anything else from her?" your mother asks.

You give your mother another of those "please stop" looks.

"Umm..." Raven says as she thinks. "My hair, actually. She has the same dark purple shade, and the hairline, and I wear my hair very much like hers, with this sort of angular cut. I can remember her helping me brush it and cut it so it wouldn't be too long."

"Oh, I remember doing that for the girls," mother says, obviously meaning your sisters. "And even Rory sometimes, since he let it grow to be like his grandfather's."

You blush while Raven giggles.

"But are you sure there's nothing else?" mother asks. "Nothing at all?"

"I don't know..." Raven says, starting to seem unsure. "I'm not sure what you're expecting."

You lean in closer and whisper in Raven's ear.

"She means your figure. Namely your chest."

Raven stands up straight and blushes red, and of course she covers her chest with her free hand.

"I-I-I don't think..." Raven says. "I have no idea. It's not like I really worried about that or anything!"

"Okay, okay, calm down," you say.

"I didn't mean anything by it," you mother says. "I was just very curious."

"Too curious," you say. "Just let it go."

Raven continues to blush while covering herself, and turns towards you in an attempt to hide them.

"Oh, Raven," you say with a slight smirk. "It's okay."

You give her a kiss on the top of her head.

"Aww...!" your mother says.

"Oh now what?" you say.

"It's just a special moment seeing my son be so sweet to the young woman he loves," she says, starting to tear up just a little.

You sigh while Raven shyly smiles.

"I think we should move on," you say.

"No, it's fine," Raven says. "Even with bringing up... resemblances to my mother, we're having a decent conversation."

"Well alright," you say.

"I'll go ahead and get us something to drink."

"There should be plenty of fruit punch over there," mother says. "It's a nice blend of mango, pineapple and passion fruit."

You head over to the large buffet tables and walk over to the large crystal punch bowl. You use magic to hold up two cups while you scoop from the bowl with a ladle. You carefully bring the full cups back to the gazebo.

"Afternoon, Rory," Ruby says.

"Good afternoon," you say back.

"Hello, Rory!" the Robertas say, Rhodes making sure she says it faster.

"Hello," you say back.

"Hello, Rory!" Renee and Roxanne both say.

"Hello," you say again.

You can see them pout as they look ahead at the gazebo where Raven stands with your parents.

"Kon'nichiwa, Rory-kun!" Rumiko says as she pops out in front of you.

"Kon'nichiwa, Rumiko-san," you say as you stop suddenly to avoid a collision. "Careful now, these are very full."

"Oh, sorry," she says. "How do I look?"

She twirls around in her floral dress. The flowers are cherry blossoms and petals rather than roses or daisies or whatever Western flowers would be used.

"That's a lovely dress," you say. "Like if a kimono were turned into a sundress."

Rumiko smiles and bows before returning to her parents. You return to the gazebo and carefully hand Raven a cup.

"Thank you," she says.

She takes a sip.

"Mmm!" she says. "I like it."

"Hopefully the minute or so I was away wasn't enough for my mother to bring up another awkward situation," you say.

"Well, she did ask about our Hawaii trip," Raven says.

"The one with the 30 million American dollar plane rental," father says.

"I'm more worried about what you two were doing all alone on a tropical island," mother says. "Raven says you were a perfect gentleman, but..."

"We were very well behaved," you lie without hesitation.

"Were you?" she asks with a serious stare.

"Of course," you say.

"We were in separate rooms on different ends of the hall, and neither of us entered the other's room."

"Right," Raven joins in. "We stayed in our own rooms."

Mother looks at the two of you suspiciously, but you keep a straight face. Raven sips her punch to keep from looking nervous.

"Well," mother says, "what did you happen to do during your time there?"

"Well we did help some people," you say. "A boy was stung by a jellyfish, and Raven healed him."

"Yes, that is true," Raven says. "The boy's family was very thankful."

"And we stopped a prison break," you say.

"That is also true," Raven says. "Though, we learned later one of the criminals still escaped, but that wasn't on us."

"I was asking more about whether or not you went swimming somewhere," mother asks.

"Well of course we went swimming," you say. "It was Hawaii. But there were always people around, it wasn't like it was that romantic."

"Yeah," Raven says. "It wasn't all that romantic at all."

Your mother accepts that, but you also hide your sense of relief because that would just give it away.

Bret Wilmarth walks up and over to your father.

"I believe it's time, sir," he says to father.

"Yes, of course," father says. "Thank you, Bret."

Bret gives a small bow and then turns towards the many guests. He clears his throat to speak.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Bret booms with the help of Sound Magic. "Please gather 'round. It is time to present the gifts and tidings everyone has brought for the birthday of our host, Master Ronald Null."

Everyone applauds as they make their way towards the gazebo. Carter and some other butlers move the large table of gifts over and set it down carefully.

"Thank you, Bret," father says again. "Now, which gift should I open first?"

"You should probably leave ours for last," you say to him. "It's not something particularly special, but I feel it'd get overshadowed if it went first."

"Well alright then," father says. "I'll save our family's gifts for the end. Let's start with... The Dubois!"

Renee smiles smugly as her family gets to go first. Father received two presents from the Dubois, but they're both quite sizeable. He opens the slightly larger of the two, and he reveals it to be a large square.

"A popcorn maker!" he says. "Wonderful! It even has the three modes: normal, caramel and chocolate! But wait, then does that mean...?"

He opens the next present.

"Yes!" he says excitedly. "100 kilos of popcorn kernals!"

"Your dad really loves popcorn," Raven whispers in a giggle to you.

"Yes, he tends to drive mother crazy with all the popping. It goes with him loving James Bond movies and marathoning them with me as I grew up."

"Merci beaucoup, Rayder," your father says as he shakes hands with Renee's father.

"De rien, mon ami," Rayder says back.

"Now, what's next?" father says as he goes back to the table. "Ah, the Rodriguez Family is right up front here. Let's go with these."

The Rodriguez Family brought three gifts, of varying sizes. Father starts with the smallest.

"Powdered seasonings?" he says. "Cinnamon, powdered sugar, and powdered caramel. Oh, now I see!"

He opens the medium box.

"Aha!" he says. "The ready-made dough, which means this is..."

He opens the large box.

"The deep fryer!" he says. "Perfect for making my own doughnuts."

Raven looks at you with a look that says, "Really?"

"If it weren't for exercising, and some forms of Healing magic, my father would be a very large and unhealthy man."

Raven stifles her laughter by putting her face into your shoulder.

"Gracias, Antonio," father says as he shakes Mr. Rodriguez's hand.

"De nada," Antonio says.

"The Grants are next," father says. "One big gift, I see. I like the shape, too."

The shape he speaks of has a slope, making the entire thing somewhat trapezoid like. He unwraps the gift and reveals...

"Ah yes," father says. "The remote controlled drink carrier!"

The carrier is essentially a giant remote controlled car, a "monster truck" with big cup holders in the truck bed.

"What nice finish as well," father says as he admires the paint. "Thank you, Jeremy."

"You're welcome," Jeremy Grant says as he shakes hands with your father.

"Next are the Bellatinos," father says. "Oh, yes, I think I know what these are."

He unwraps the four matching cylinders and reveals wine bottles.

"Oh, yes," father says with a big smile. "Both regular and Vino cotto varieties of the Bellatino brand red and white wines. Delizioso. Grazie, amico mio."

"Prego," Mr. Bellatino says as he shakes hands with your father.

"Vino cotto?" Raven asks.

"It literally means 'cooked wine'," you say. "It's a specialty of the Abruzzo region in Italy, near Milan where the Bellatinos live."

The Sullivans give father a set of cufflinks, and it's revealed they're Enchanted with all the standards: one-time protective shield; increased stamina of the wearer; and item durability for the cufflinks' own protection.

The Danforths give father 10 kilograms of various types of jerky, from beef to turkey to even pork and lamb jerky. You and Raven again chuckle at the idea of your father being a junk food junky.

The Rhodes Family, though jewelcrafters, present father with polished wood beer mugs with the family crest engraved into the sides.

The Evans Family play to father's other area of interest, quirky gadgets and paraphernalia, and present him with a set of notebooks where the pages are magnetically attached to each other. This allows for the pages to be pulled out without tearing, and then stuck to any number of things.

The Dylan Family present father with a new golem, based off an old-timey robot. It's very square with clunky limbs, much to father's delight.

The Garcias present father with a "bottle loft." It is a special shelf unit with magnets for placing a beer or soda bottle with metal bottle caps, so that they hang from the top. It of course also has a bottle opener attachment and a slot to collect the caps.

The Orville Family present father with healthier snacks, such as whole wheat breadsticks, granola and both white cheddar and mozzarella string cheeses. Father promises not to mix them with the less healthy food gifts he's been given, such as the jerky.

The Dvorak Family give father the largest gift of them all, a sculpture made out of repurposed film reel tins. The sculpture is of a man riding a horse while also signaling a charge. It's rather well done and you can see the labels with movie names--written in Russian--on various parts, such as the man's chest and the horse's neck.

The Reynolds Family present father with a keg of their newest stout blend, as well as a hefty bag of beer nuts to eat with it. Father plans to use the new mugs from the Rhodes Family with the drink.

The Vands, being a Transformation magic family, they present father with new brain-teaser puzzles, such as the "Interstellar Phenomena", "Darwin's Dinosaur Egg", and the "Classic Literature Collection".

The Koskinen Family present father with a set of unique magnetic balance lamps, as well as a wooden acoustic phone amplifier. You set the smart phone into the slot and then the conical hole acts like a megaphone.

The Rivers Family present father with a healthy amount of kombucha, the tangy, effervescent and fermented tea, as well as plenty of dried fruits for further healthy snacking.

The Zoza Family present a set of rather lovely prism light candles, which is to say, candles inside a cylinder of prism glass to project a rainbow of colors as the candles emit light.

The Hanamori Family present many different Japanese specialties, such as an ornate bento box for father's work lunches, reusable chopsticks to go with it, and both Japanese sake and beer.

Finally, father goes through the Null Family gifts. Grandfather Sixth and Uncle Roger, along with Ross and Reed, present father with the present they were "keeping secret" from father, and it turns out to be a custom golf cart, outfitted with many useful enhancements, such as a more secure area to store the golf bag and clubs.

Aunt Rita, Grandmother Ruth and mother present father with quite a bit of artwork, such as a personalized family portrait painting that features all 11 of you in the main branch, "Notable Animals in Literature", and "Fingerprints on My Heart". The last one is of course from mother, it is her thumb and his thumb, enlarged and overlapped as red and blue to form a heart shape, with their names below it, as well as their wedding date. Uncle Roger jokes that father can't forget their anniversary anymore with that one, and everyone has a nice laugh.

Your sisters are before you, and they present him with a hand-knit scarf, reversibly striped so that one side is red and white while the other is black and blue.

"It's lovely girls," he says to them both as he gives each of them a hug. "And now, for the final gift, from my son Rorek VII, and even his new lady friend, Raven Roth."

You step forward, and Raven sheepishly follows, and you bow while she curtsies. Everyone applauds, and father starts with the cube.

"Oh!" he says. "Iridescent drinking glasses! Two sets of four for a total of eight. I like the colors. And then..."

He opens the rectangle.

"Three sets of novelty drink chillers!" he says. "They look like golf balls. I better be careful not to confuse these with my real golf balls."

Everyone shares a chuckle.

"I really like these," father says. "Thank you, son."

"You're welcome, father," you say. "I'm glad you like them."

"Of course I like them, son," he says as he brings you in for a side hug. "They're from you. Even when you were only getting me mugs, it still meant a lot to me that you did. If you didn't get me anything, that would've been troubling."

"Well," you say, feeling a bit humbled and foolish. "Maybe for old time's sake, I'll get you a mug for Christmas."

"I think that'd be nice," he chuckles. "Something with a little snow man on it, perhaps."

"And so," Bret says, "thus concludes the gift opening for Master Rodger. Now, we shall take a moment for the ladies to prepare their dresses for the ballroom. Gentlemen, this way."

You expect Raven to leave with your mother and sisters, but she stays put beside you.

"Aren't you going to change at least the skirt?" you ask as she walks with you arm in arm.

"Don't worry, this dress comes with a surprise," she says.

"Well alright," you say with a smirk.

The two of you follow father, uncle, cousins and grandfather, along with all the other men, into the ball room.

"Oh wow," she says. "It's beautiful."

"Yes, yes it is," you say as you look at shining chandeliers and polished floor. "But what is this surprise you mentioned about your dress?"

She smirks and takes a few steps back. She then snaps her fingers and *FOOF* her full length straight skirt springs outward into a feathery layered skirt.

"Wow!" you say. "How clever."

"Well your sisters created it," she says. "I have a feeling they used it exclusively for me."

"Cheeky devils," you say. "But smart."

"So, Ms. Roth," Mr. Grant says as he and son Roy walk over. "How was it that you and young Rory here happened to meet?"

"Well, let's just say he drove into town and happened to help me with a big meathead who was hitting on me."

"Ever the gentleman," Roy says.

"Thank you," you say.

"So where do you hail from?" Mr. Grant asks.

"Well, I live in America," Raven says, "but I hail from Azarath. It's alright if you don't know where that is, we're rather a small country and keep to ourselves."

"I see," Mr. Grant says. "But what continent is that on?"

"Uh..." she says as you both realize you never came up with a lie for that. "It's... Eurasian... Southern, to where it's almost in the Middle East."

"I see," he says again.

"Tell us about yourself," Roy asks. "Those of us who arrived later would like to know a bit more about the lady who has captured Rory's heart."

"Oh, um," Raven says as she notices the other gentlemen gathering around. "I'm not really sure where to start."

"Well for starters," you say, "Raven is the Raven of the Teen Titans."

Everyone marvels at learning this.

"So then you're a real life superhero?" Mr. Evans asks.

"Yes, I suppose I am," Raven says.
