I don't mind lootboxes as long as duplicates are removed from the pool as necessary -- there's at least a sense of progress then. For instance, in an MTG game, you may need a playset (4) of a card, so getting that many copies is okay in the long run. Things like Overwatch -- which has thousands of items but still won't bother to give you one new item per box -- are way less interesting to me. It makes filling out a collection a goddamn hamster wheel, just like the creators intended.

Dragon Ball FighterZ tries a compromise: you can roll on lootbox rewards, but only with in-game currency. Duplicates are converted into special coins and every 10 you get you can roll on a separate pool that guarantees something new. I'd still rather just have an in-game accessories shop, but it's not the worst way to go.

You can only buy tokens in $25 combinations. This will give you 25000 tokens. A dinner box cost 6000 tokens. The deluxe box which has an ultra rare chance to unlock the open bar is just 13250 tokens though!

I wouldn't mind if you could create an in game economy around it. The problem in most of these games is that nothing is tradeable so you can't sell off/trade your dupes to others in need.

Id also be happy if this wasn't the main way to progress. I like the option of buying things with in game currency outright for more and also have the option of lootboxes for less currency.

It's a shame a free to play game like Warframe has a better economy than full priced shit. The only thing that has a random element can still reward you with shit that you can trade with other players.

All duplicates should go towards in-game currency to unlock the items you want, like CoD MWR, Overwatch and Rainbow Six

TF2's boxes are so bad. Pretty much every item that can be unboxed is worth significantly less than the cost of the key, like you can buy the vast majority of them for pennies on the market place.

The only items truly worth paying the price for are so rare you could spend hundreds before getting one, and if it isn't a desirable one it is still worth less than the keys you bought.
