Despite the "giant leap for mankind" is it really alright to generalize it as human achievement? Even now there's undeveloped countries living a few centuries in the past.

The moon landing pretty much came about through the cold war and that portion should be recognized as an essential element to the history.

On the other hand the U.S. owed a lot to Nazi rocket scientists that helped make Apollo possible.

What does OT think?

At the time it might've been thought as a human achievement. But interest in physical exploration of space just sort of petered out after that and never paved the way for humanity's voyage to the stars. It might as well be considered an American achievement at this point.

If you're (generalized you) going to argue that putting man on the moon wasn't an American achievement, then there's thousands of claims to success that shouldn't be had by nearly every 1st world country.

Neil Armstrong himself said he considered it a human achievement more than an American one. He and some of the other NASA scientists apparently had discussions about whether to put a UN flag there, but Congress intervened and made it illegal to plant any flag other than an American one.

The flag almost assuredly isn't even in existence anymore. It was a $5 flag from Wal-Mart - those can barely stand up to Earth weather, never mind five decades of lunar dust storms.

If it had survived, yes, it would have been bleached white by solar radiation given that it had no atmosphere to protect it, but it almost assuredly didn't survive long enough for that to be a pertinent factor.

It was reported that the flag was blown over by the blast of the rocket exhaust when they left during the Apollo 11 mission, so he's probably not wrong in those regards.

It's pretty blatantly a primarily American achievement though. The Space Race literally existed for Nationalistic bragging rights.

Also, minor correction on my part - I meant "debris storms", not "dust storms". Not sure what I was thinking when I wrote dust, as that's not what I meant.
