I want to be a father and experience the joys, frustrations, worry, and proud moments of raising one of your own from birth. However, I know that I can barely take care of myself and am scared witless of the idea of having to raise someone else, too. Not to mention that this crazy world already has enough people. Adoption is a viable solution, but without my own place to live, a significant other, and a good financial situation, I'm pretty much boned.

Yeah, parenting isn't for everyone. It's 2018, there's way too many humans, and too much focus on career and experiencing the world to be bogged down by kids. We (as a species) are at a point in time where people really should be considering whether or not to have kids. Of course, the low-income, drug-addled, and poorly educated tend to have more kids whereas the higher-income, more stable, and more educated people have less, so Idiocracy is just a few generations around the corner.

You could always look into mentoring a kid or helping out at a youth center.

Sounds like you need to get your house in order before adding to your household. And, if you're planning on raising a kid, you're kinda going to need to rely on either a partner or relatives to provide a stable home environment.
