This stuff is great. It's like James Bond in a Berserk universe lol

I've never seen the movies, but I just picked these up on a whim and I'm loving it.

I liked both Conan films, but I think Red Sonja is the best of the three. He's like Conan if the barbarian was a supporting role. It's been a long time since I've seen any of them, though.

Those are the Marvel ones.

Basically, Marvel did a bunch in a black-and-white magazine in the 70s (which actually lasted until the 90s), along with a color comic book (which also started in the 70s and ended in the 90s). Then they lost the license to the franchise, and Dark Horse picked it up in the early 2000s, and printed comics right up to the beginning of this year.

Marvel actually just got the license back, though I don't think they've done anything with it yet.

Red Sonja is more or less in the same boat - she started as a character spun out of Conan when Marvel was doing the comic back in the 70s, and Marvel ran a comic with her in the 70s and 80s, but then she was sort of in limbo until Dynamite started doing a new comic a few years ago.

Kull the Conqueror is another character in that mold, and Marvel ran a comic with him in the 70s and 80s, and Dark Horse did a new comic with him in the mid-2000s.

Robert E. Howard was a damned prolific writer in the very short period (less than a decade) he was writing, and a LOT of his stuff wound up getting picked up by comic books.

It's because the comic ones were still subject to the Comics Code at the time, but the magazines Marvel printed weren't.

They had a similar dynamic with the Tomb of Dracula/horror comics in the 70s - they could get away with more in the magazines than they could in comics.

But it's definitely worth noting that, even if you LIKE the Conan movies with Ah-nold or the Red Sonja movie with Ah-nold and Brigitte Nielsen, they're pretty different from the actual comics and original stories. Most people don't realize that Conan is supposed to be one of the most intelligent warriors of his age, fluent in multiple languages, a cunning tactician, and far quicker and agile than anything Arnold has ever been able to do in his entire life.

True. I think you had to be 16 or 17 to get Savage Sword and Tomb of Dracula. Tomb of Dracula was another favorite (70s-80s were my comics heyday).

Marvel also came out with a magazine called EPIC which was like Heavy Metal. I think that was 18+ IIRC.

I went from Savage Sword to the original Conan novels by Howard so by the time the movies came out I was a bit jaded. Couldn't get into the movies. Maybe I'll give them another shot.

They did. Then they spun it off into an entire sub-line of comics that were deliberately non-Code and creator owned. The success of the idea is part of what eventually led them to drop the Code entirely, and what inspired DC to later do the Vertigo brand after Marvel sort of let Epic wither and die. But while it was a going thing in the 80s, it actually churned out a few pretty good titles.

Marvel had a lot of sub-brands in the 80s. They also went the complete opposite way with the Star line, which were all for super-young kids (with stuff like Spider-Ham and the Care Bears), and the New Universe line (which was there attempt to do something like what they later did with the Ultimate line).

Then later on they did other "mature" lines like Max and Marvel Knights, which were supposed to be grittier interpretations of characters than what you'd see in the mainline comics.

Good thing too. That's how all the companies got away with it back then. Loop holes can be a good thing sometimes.

Thanks for the link. I'm a comics fan (70s, 80s, early 90s) and pop into a comic shop from time to time. The same one parodied on Big Bang Theory in Pasadena, near CalTech.

I like to discuss new and old storylines when I go into the shop. Seems like an interesting site.

Trip down Memory Lane in this topic.

Marvel did some great work with their licensed comics in the '70s. I mean, Hell, their Star Wars line helped them stave off bankruptcy until the (All-New, All-Different!) X-Men picked up steam.

Fun fact for those who don't know - Marvel actually wrote all of the character descriptions for the Transformer and GI Joe toys in the 80s - Hasbro just brought random toys over from Japan (Transformers) or made random soldier-y looking figures (GI Joe), and then Marvel had to come up with names, personalities, and backstory for them to put on the packaging. Almost everything we know about characters in those franchises in their original incarnation comes mainly from Marvel - or more specifically, Larry Hama (GI Joe) and Bob Budiansky (Transformers).

Also for those who don't know, the early GI Joe comics were really, really good - most people at the time praised them for being way better than the cartoon (which itself was pretty damned good), and a lot of ideas from it (like Snake-Eyes being everyone's favorite character, Storm Shadow eventually switching sides, and the entire backstory between the two) wound up getting carried over into later versions of the franchise.

Hard to say - the book ran for years, and had multiple different artists over that span. And I don't remember their being one specific artist associated with the book the way it happens with some other titles.

If you can remember what issues you read, this might help you figure it out:

Seconding the nod for the G.I. Joe comics in general and Larry Hama in particular. The dude had one of the longest runs in all of Marvel as a writer on that comic, and he may or may not have passed Chris Claremont's run on the X-Men. (I'd have to look up the specifics.) He was also really good at keeping things clear and consistent.
