Yeah I don't get how anyone is computer illiterate in this day and age but holy shit.

Like when this guy was trying to convert a word document to pdf and he was loading up these ultra shady sites online to do it and I'm like... "bruh wtf just print to PDF".

Young people are just as bad especially ones that were raised on smart phones and tablets. I have worked with some new hires that have no clue how to operate a pc. A lot of them tell me their schools don't even have pcs apparently everyone gets their own tablet and they do all their work on that. The one person didn't even know how to type on a keyboard they were typing with their thumbs like they were holding a tablet it was weird.

Disagree. Older people are bad in a completely unhelpful way.

They are the types where I have to ask Is there a big box, then small box, then big box? When something asks for first name, middle initial, and last name.

Young people at least know the basics.

The most annoying thing about being a techie is having this conversation literally every time you meet anyone:

"What do you do?"

Like seriously, every single human on Earth has apparently managed to mess up their ______, and I guess I'm the expert on fixing Windows or OSX or whatever. Because I've written software that has very little to nothing to do with it.

Next call was a lady who wanted a specific port blocked on our network, port 445 it's not an uncommon port for an ISP to just flat out block no matter what. Verizon and Comcast also block it from what I see here, and it's a port we have blocked for network security.

She started insulting me when I told her we can't change it and then asked to cancel her service. I recommended she find a way to re-configure whatever she is using to try using a different port if possible and she just insulted me more. That was a fun one and I'm not being sarcastic. =P

Out of curiosity, why do ISPs block that port?

Apparently it's a commonly used port for targeting computers with networking exploits.

My favorite is when I ask someone to check a cord when the PC says network cable unplugged and I get a 'SO I GOTTA DO YOUR JOB FOR YOU?'

I mean if you'd rather wait a day or so for a tech to plug in a cord for you instead of just doing it for yourself and getting back now, then I mean sure we'll do that. You're only hurting yourself at that point.

I'm lucky I moved out of my hometown because my father kept calling me for random things about his computer.. So now when we talk and he happens to mention a problem, I try to help him, but honestly, half the time I have no idea what he's talking about or what he's trying to do so I just tell him I'd have to be there physically to check it out.. And since I don't visit that often, he usually ends up taking it to some computer repair place instead of waiting for my next visit. (cause I'm not driving 3 hours just to show him how to modify Hotmail contacts, or trying to find where he accidentally moved his latest pictures, and ridiculous things like that)

Yeah, it's getting less and less common, but the random options/button touchers really foul up things and it's so difficult to figure out what they did since they can't explain anything.

Just spent 35 minutes trying to get an older lady to setup a new password. The number of people that are incapable of filling in 4 fields properly all at once is wild.

Username:
Current Password:

New Password:
Confirm New Password:

35 minutes of trying to walk her through filling this in over and over and she kept typing at least one of them wrong. Of course our login page is unhelpful when you fail as it just gives a generic error, but even then. 35 minutes is wild.

Also since we're not to know people's passwords I couldn't have her tell me what it is to make sure it actually is within our requirements, I just had to keep repeating the requirements and hoping she actually understood what they meant.

There's no way you were unable to figure out that a person you are helping didn't even have a tower plugged before an hour of troubleshooting. Usually:
A tiny fuse has blown inside that's near-impossible to get to, even harder to replace, and hasn't been manufactured since roughly 1987.

Or, someone ran it empty and screwed up the magnetron somehow. Don't bother even trying to repair it, as bits of it are made of beryllium oxide (which is essentially super-asbestos).

when i was working tech support i had a customer call me asking why her computer wasn't working

after a frustrating hour, i realized she only had a monitor but no computer -_-

O_o

I'm baffled how you were able to go an hour without figuring out there was no PC.

you have to be very patient talking to old people on the phone doing tech support

Except one of the very first questions would be "what's showing on your monitor? Nothing? Press the power button on your tower" or "click on something", so your obvious lie dies right there.

old people don't know what a tower is

And this is why when they ask what you mean, you tell them its the big box that's plugged into their monitor. And they proceed to tell you nothing is plugged into it. Takes 5 minutes tops.

but then they also want to babble on telling me about their grandchildren

Just spent 35 minutes trying to get an older lady to setup a new password. The number of people that are incapable of filling in 4 fields properly all at once is wild.

Username:
Current Password:

New Password:

One of my worst tech support calls was like that.

This old guy was calling into Frontier's tech support because he couldn't log into his Yahoo account. We were technically not supposed to help him with his Yahoo account, but I decided to be nice and try to help him. I regretted that decision pretty quickly. I walked him through the forgot password procedure. It took him forever to fill out the password reset form properly. About 35 minutes later, it was time for him to log in and put his new password in. He forgot what he put for his new password. I told him there was nothing else I could do for him and ended the call.

Yep, it's comical when people immediately forget their password. Well, it'd be comical if it wasn't as frustrating.
