https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/08/trust-us-were-secretly-working-foreign-government-how-australias-proposed-crypto

But latest challenge to our collective security comes not from Facebook or Google or Russian hackers or Cambridge Analytica: it comes from the Australian government. Their new proposed Access and Assistance bill would require the operators of all of that technology to comply with broad and secret government orders, free from liability, and hidden from independent oversight. Software could be rewritten to spy on end-users; websites re-engineered to deliver spyware. Our technology would have to serve two masters: their customers, and what a broad array of Australian government departments decides are the interests of Australias national security. Australia would not be the last to demand these powers: a long line of countries are waiting to demand the same kind of assistance.

In fact, Australia is not the first nation to think of granting itself such powers, even in the West. In 2016, the British government took advantage of the countrys political chaos at the time to push through, largely untouched, the first post-Snowden law that expanded not contracted Western domestic spying powers. At the time, EFF warned of its dangers - particularly orders called technical capability notices, which could allow the UK to demand modifications to tech companies hardware, software, and services to deliver spyware or place backdoors in secure communications systems. These notices would remain secret from the public.

Its worth underlining here just how sweeping such a power is. To give one example: our smartphones are a mass of sensors. They have microphones and cameras, GPS locators, fingerprint and facial scanners. The behavior of those sensors is only loosely tied to what their user interfaces tell us.

Australia seeks to give its law enforcement, border and intelligence services, the power to order the creators and maintainers of those tools to do acts and things to protect the interests of Australias national security, the interests of Australias foreign relations or the interests of Australias national economic well-being.

The acts and things are largely unspecified but they include enabling surveillance, hacking into computers, and remotely pulling data from private computers and public networks.

The range of people who would have to secretly comply with these orders is vast. The orders can be served on any designated communications provider, which includes telcos and ISPs, but is also defined to include a person [who] develops, supplies or updates software used, for use, or likely to be used, in connection with: (a) a listed carriage service; or (b) an electronic service that has one or more end users in Australia; or a person [who] manufactures or supplies customer equipment for use, or likely to be used, in Australia.

I'm usually against the more extreme language and angry rhetoric in topics like these, especially when it comes from Fluffygerm. I like to think there's more to say then "fuck 'em all to death".

But this is pretty abhorrent, and I'm particularly disgusted at the government right now for their garbage in-fighting and general incompetence over the last couple of years. In ten years, we've had four Prime Ministers - actually, we're currently on our fifth. It's like if Hillary Clinton took Obama's seat before Obama's term was up, then won a full term of her own, but then got kicked out by Romney before her term was up. Then Romney would get kicked out by like Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz, before being replaced by Donald Trump this year. I get that there's laws against that except in extreme circumstances, but in Australia we've had party in-fighting and politicians behaving like they're on a reality show - if Tony Abbott wins a debate, Julia Gillard has to leave politics forever! Shit like that. And it has led to the leader of our nation being kicked out, only for another fucking forgettable mook to take their place.

We had politicians arguing about who broke a marble table in Parliament House, after Tony Abbott and his kin had a rager of a party after he was kicked out of the PM position. When news of this broken table came to light, the people responsible for breaking it attacked the cleaners and said that the leaking of that information is a serious security risk and they should be fired. We had that same onion-eating fuck recently saying - and this is more or less a quote - "I'm worried that this Renewable Energy bill is more about renewable energy than it is about cost to the Australian people". This fucking troglodyte who wants to keep funding coal, standing in the way of progress because "it'll cost too much" despite how much it can save in the future - who previously called renewable energy windmills "an eyesore" when he was Prime Minister. This man led the fucking country, and his machinations have led to the ousting of no less than 3 prime ministers before their term was up - not counting his own premature ejection from the position.

This fucking government, who hasn't had a leader serve a full, uninterrupted term since 2007, who just voted in a Christian-minded, anti-gay marriage idiot named Scott Morrison as our fifth PM in 11 years. Is now trying to push laws that would make it legal for them to pull data from private computers remotely. Just sneak in some spyware, copy your files without your knowledge or consent. That turns my stomach, and it comes from a government who threw out two full cabinets full of classified Government information - because they lost the keys. And that's from earlier this year! The person who found the cabinets turned them into a national newspaper, who published some slightly less egregious content, but who stressed that there was some seriously classified shit in those cabinets.

And at this point, you really have to weigh your options. Do you risk aligning yourself with some random pot-stirrer on a message board, just the once, to protest a news story that's going to get the really annoying "censorship" nutjobs going, the kind who huff and puff about censorship when Nintendo covers up some skin on a videogame character for an English release? Or do you disregard the otherwise egregious source, the type of person who'll jump to extremist language just to cause a reaction, and make a solid and angry point against the news for the shit show as it is? As much as I'd rather keep ignoring this style of posting, I can't help but fucking agree. This is an erosion of our rights by our government, and given how petty, incompetent and just generally anti-public the government has been, I can't just say "shit move, I hope they get what's coming to them". This is more shit behavior from a shit government, and they need to be fucking sacked.

The point I was trying to make in my above ramble is this - how can I trust a garbage government, who has consistently and habitually let the Australian people down with their poor conduct and countless scandals, who has been responsible for a massive data leak of their own, to be responsible with these powers that they're trying to bestow upon themselves? How can I trust that this over-reach can and will be used responsibly? I hardly know where my nation's leading politicians stand at the best of times - why give them the benefit of the doubt?

And doubly so considering the recent news that Peter Dutton let a woman into our country against the advice of our border patrol, knowing that she would be working on a visitor's visa, because the person she wanted to work for was a Liberal party donor? Link here - http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-30/dutton-ignored-border-force-advice-to-grant-au-pairs-visa/10182374?pfmredir=sm - and then there's been politicians paying for trips to weddings and to stay in 5-star hotels on holiday, using tax-payer money to do so? These people don't care about rights, they care about looking out for their own interests. Giving the government this sort of overhead has a very real chance of making this shitty behavior even worse.

So yeah, fuck this garbage. Our government is in the fucking gutter, and if they thing they can pull this garbage after all the other shit they've put us through as a nation, then they can get separated from their job come next election. Get these fucking clowns out of the government, and preferably out of the fucking country - end this ouroboros of lies, scandal and corruption that has been plaguing the Australian people for far too fucking long. Get fucking rid of them all for trying to get away with this shit.

You could've said all that without making those cowardly unsubstantiated pot shots about my character.

I really could have said what I said without mentioning you, I agree. But your reaction to it has only strengthened my opinion of you.

I called you a pot-stirrer and a user who uses extremist language for the sake of causing a reaction, and that's exactly what you've done. You struck right back at me with a "shut the fuck up and get off your high horse" - maybe hoping I'd go further with the less-than-positive comments about your posting? - and when I responded in kind, you jumped to "I hope the Australian government does get away with this breach of privacy just to show you for your unsubstantiated character assassination against me!" - which is being a bit extreme, don't you think? "Character assassination"? Going back on your initial post in this thread, possibly as a way of feeding the anger that I expressed in my other posts? What I said was an opinion of you that I formed after seeing you post for a month or two, one that people don't necessarily agree with or who have to agree with - a subjective statement that wasn't presented as some objective, inalienable truth. An opinion that any other user might have come to on their own, that's only more visible in your responses to criticism.

It's easy to just write someone off as a troll, especially when it's clear from day one that they're just trying to goad people into breaking the ToS. But given that yelling "Troll! Troll! You're a troll!" can be a shortcut to an easy moderation, the label doesn't mean anything if you can't prove it. Given that a comment or two against you and your style of posting is enough to get you to swear at me and rescind on your initial post to... make a point against me? It just proves what I said in the first place. I mentioned offhandedly that you spend a lot of time stirring the pot and using a lot of language that's more extreme than it needs to be to make any sort of point, and those traits usually mean that my views or attitudes towards something almost never align with yours - except, maybe, this once. You then try to stir the pot with "shut the fuck up", and call my assessment "character assassination".

You really are just a pot-stirring troll. I don't say that specifically to cause a reaction, I say it because everything I've seen from you in this thread has reinforced my points against you and solidified how I see you as a poster. And I get that this sort of attention is what can feed another person, keeping someone typing meaningless words for hours - but even as I sit here wasting my time on this stupid fucking response, I think it bears mentioning that everything you've said in response to me only makes you look worse.

It's too late for this shit, so I'll wrap it up - good topic, I feel like we might have agreed in places regarding this news. But your posting style has made you a hard person to even contemplate agreeing with, and your response to that observation doesn't do you any favors.
