mono-ab = fat gut

Seriously though, muscular guys who don't have a well defined six-pack are really just still too high body fat. Getting well defined six-pack abs requires a super low body fat percentage. You can easily be muscular without having a super low body fat percentage.

You need a body fat percentage of around 12% of less to have well defined six-pack abs. There are plenty of muscular guys who are at around 15% body fat, and they're muscular, but the abs aren't well defined since the body fat percentage is still too high.

For comparison sake, the "average guy" is around 20% body fat. Obesity is defined as 25% or more body fat.

So women are obese by default?

Obese for women is 32% also 12% is pretty high. I thought men needed under 9% to have nice abs.

that means you haven't lost enough body fat. 6-pack abs is low body fat more than it is high musculature.

Not a lot of fat on a swimmer, swimming is cardio FYI.

I was talking more about men when I said the "average guy" is around 20% body fat and obesity is more than 25% body fat. Women do naturally have a slightly higher body fat percentage. (Boobs are mostly fat, for example, and that's why fat men have boobs too.) Women generally average around 5% of so higher body fat than men, so obesity in women would be like more than 30% body fat.

That's because swimmers have a very low body percentage, but they're doing mostly cardio instead of lifting weights so they're not really "bulky muscular." What Sahuagin said is true. Six pack abs have much more to do with getting your body fat percentage super low than it does gaining muscle. You can do both, but most people just do one or the other, not both. It's very difficult to do both.

in these cases it maybe is because they don't have enough muscle, since they're women.

another thing it could be that I'm not 100% sure of is flexing. a million years ago when I sort of half had a 6-pack (or 4-pack), it would only show up if I flexed my abs.
