It's closed, get the fuck out, why is this confusing??

Ask a woman if she needs help and she declines, inform her we have been closed for 25 minutes and she responds with "whatever" and just keep walking around.

5 years incarceration minimum.

Play Nyan Cat or something equally annoying over the speakers til they get pissed off and leave.

There may or may not be a reason why I'm chronically unemployed.

This happened all the time at Hollywood Video and it never bothered me because I just logged the extra time. Extra half hour pay for doing nothing? Yes please.

Nope. If you're in the store and you're an inconsiderate asshole then you can stay for quite a while past closing time.

When I was a manager at a Kmart, we weren't allowed to tell people to leave at closing, so I'd just send employees to follow them around and "straighten" in the aisles they were in, constantly stopping to ask them if they needed help and just generally make it as awkward as possible so they'd leave quicker

A FYE kicked me out 6 minutes before closing once. I was so mad, I knew I was under a time constraint and was looking for 1 item. I just walked the entire mall to get there too (Which is a 12 minute walk if you speed walk).

Those people should be jailed.

I'll agree that places that kick you out (or just treat you shitty) while the store's are still open are terrible. Hell, I've had people be nasty to me for being in a place half an hour before closing

but I've also been on the other end, and have had to ask people to leave 10 minutes after closing (it was actually store policy that the doors had to be locked no later than 9:10pm, and if the owner saw we hadn't it'd be our asses on the line). People get unreasonably pissed off about not being allowed to stay

but the WORST is people that ARRIVE after close, and start pounding on the door and yelling to be let in, despite the doors being locked and the open sign being turned off

I work luxury retail and let me tell you the people who are willing to spend $500+ on a handbag/luggage will fully use that power to keep you as long as they want

I worked in retail for 10 years and I can say without a doubt that that store's customers take closing time to mean the time that they have to be at the checkout register by, or even worse, heading to the checkout register by, and not the time that they have to be out of the fucking store. I swear probably 90% of my closing shifts saw at least one customer meandering to the register as late as 5 minutes after closing. To my recollection the latest that we ever got the last customer out of the store was nearly 30 minutes after closing, and this was just on a regular-ass Saturday night, not during the holiday season or anything like that. Sundays were the worst. We would often have large families come to the register 5 minutes after closing with two or three carriages full of items, only half of which they were taking, splitting into multiple orders, and refusing to do the orders at separate registers to speed up the process.

I have been told I can stay without a worry before when I expressed my consciousness of the store being closed. I certainly don't want to hold them up because they have to get home. That said, for this reason, it is rare when I shop so late in the day. I don't want to be "that guy."

It's even worse when they lie to you that they need to buy laundry detergent or their child's birthday will be ruined.

I'm right there with you. Whenever I have a customer in the store right at close, I follow them around occasionally asking if they need help. I even make it obvious that I'm there to annoy them lol.

Which is, again, why I don't like shopping so late.

I was saying "You're closed, shouldn't I go check out and go home?" I was trying to be polite with my actions, too, but... they stopped me. Probably because of the "can't be rude to the customer" thing you mentioned. I was out of there before ten after, of course. Should have been sooner, but c'est le vie.

That totally depends on the store. Some actually have the balls to kick you out.

Seriously, unless you're buying something medical-related there's 0 reason to even have to have that conversation. It can wait until they open in the morning.

But the more baffling part of this is that they actually didn't tell you to GTFO. I worked for a company/store that was obsessed with customer service and especially the customer survey rating and even we would hassle customers to get out once we were closed.
