If you default on your college loans they can garnish your wages. So yeah, they can take it forcefully from you.

I'd rather not be harassed by creditors.

It's amazing how many people actually haven't heard about wage garnishment. I have worked in payroll before, and I have had countless people call and ask me why there was a garnishment on their paycheck. They would always be like, "Oh you can't do that!" and I am like, "Oh yes we can!" It's amazing how stupid some people are.

Why would you assume they can only take $20. They can actually take hundreds. The limit is that they can't reduce your pay to below minimum wage. So for example, if you make $15/hr and minimum wage is $7.50/hr, then they can take half your paycheck. So you would be working at minimum wage until your total debt is paid.

Plus, as other people have said, going in debt like this will ruin your credit score. You will never be able to get a loan for anything, so good luck ever buying a house or anything that requires a loan. Heck, you could even have trouble renting an apartment since most landlords won't rent to a tenant with bad credit since bad credit tells them you likely won't pay your rent on time. Basically you would probably have to rent a shithole in the ghetto since those would likely be the only ones with less strict rules regarding credit.

The problem has more to do with the conditioning that college is a necessity. There are many strong careers that don't require that kind of education. Mechanics, landscapers, carpenters, etc. The price keeps going up but they don't care about your debt.

Things can go one of two ways in the future.

Either we may get an administration that erases all student debt and works towards free tuition.

Or eventually there will be stricter rules and penalties for not paying back your loans. They already can take quite a bit, as it's fed min wage, not local min wage that they can reduce you to. There are quite a few people who end up working under the table because of that (a $10 an hour under the table job pays more then a $15 one where you pay taxes and your wages are garnished for instance).

Real problem though is the fact that so many people have insanely high loans at this point due to not even covering the interest on them over many years. People with $80k in student debt originally have over $200k now, with monthly payments recommended over $2000 a month lol.

Current situation is not viable long term. Debt even if no more loans were given out, is increasing steadily instead of going down. Right now you can sign up for income based repayment plans and as long as you are making less then about 15-20k a year, pay nothing or almost nothing (depending on your marital status etc). You can do that indefinately and well, because many people go to college then find out they are going to be paid $30k as a teacher for the first 5 years before getting any kind of raise, they just do the income based repayment plan.

No big deal right? Just start paying it off later once you actually make enough to rent a one bedroom apartment.

Wrong, you gain interest all that time, and if you reconsolidate or a bunch of other options, your interest gets added into your principle, meaning you now pay interest on all of it. That is how someone can go from 80k in debt to 200k in debt. I have seen it happen.

System is crazy right now....great way to make money off people, but...many are just giving up because of that and never expect to pay off their loans.

>Talks about somebody not knowing what they're talking about
>Claims that literal debtors prisons exist

When claims of debtors prisons are made nowadays, it *never* refers to the literal system that was made illegal hundreds of years ago. Instead, it relates to cases where people who refuse to pay fines are locked up as an alternative punishment or for violating a court order, a system that bears zero resemblance to actual debtors prisons (and, most often, it's used figuratively for a system where no actual prison is involved). You can't just lock up somebody who owes you a sum of money any more and then refuse to feed that prisoner unless a friend or family member pays for the food.

If you can't pay child support, you can wind up in prison (and then iirc you can be stuck paying back for the months you missed while in prison). If you miss paying a college loan, they can't put you in prison.

Tells me I dont know what Im talking about and then proceeds to prove me right.

Now when did I say they were the same debtors prisons that existed hundreds of years ago?

I didnt.

They're literally nothing like debtors prisons. And calling them that is the same hyperbole that people use to refer to college basketball players as slaves (or refer to other things as concentration camps). The fact that you somehow think that the situations are even remotely comparable demonstrates that you're not even close to knowing what you're talking about. You hear an exaggeration or figure of speech and somehow you have it in your mind that it's the actual thing. And, by your same "logic," anybody who goes to prison for tax evasion is going to a debtors' prison.

There are no debtors' prisons any more. The people who wind up in prison in lieu of a fine are going to the *same* facilities as other offenders and receive the same treatment as other offenders at that facility.
