To Anybody who played both games? Been playing Galaxy of Heroes mobile game alot and really like Darth Nihilus...probably will get The Sith Lords on Steam/Humble, but should I play the 1st KOTOR beforehand in order to follow the story better? Or do they both fit as standalone stories?

They have some narrative connections so I say yes. Plus it's a great game anyway

They can be played as standalone games, but play the first one anyway, I liked it better than II

You don't really need to play 1 before 2, but you should because 1 is a good game, and because 2 WILL spoil major plot details of 1 if you decide you want go back and play it later.

Also keep in mind, KotOR 2 is kind of broken plotwise because it was forced out before it was really finished, so if you're getting it on PC, you might want to look into tracking down one of the mods that restore lost content.

Thanks...can you explain the 'lost content' w/o spoiling? if not, I'll just look it up.

It's a ton of stuff, the game was straight up not finished when they released it. The restored content mods include a bunch of dialogue, multiple cutscenes, a significant story quest and an entire planet. Playing the game without all the missing details is a garbled mess.

I think the steam version of KOTOR II straight up come with the restored content mod, or if not, it's very easy to apply to the game. Had a blast playing it earlier this year more than a decade after it came out.

But yes, KOTOR I should probably come first since there are some narrative details that help for II.

The game mostly hangs together until the ending, it just gets choppy before you head to the final planet.

Basically, it was the result of Obsidian saying they needed about 6-8 more months of development time to finish the game, and then EA telling them at the last minute that they wanted them to get it out by Christmas or else, so Obsidian had to completely change all of their plans and salvage what they could, and drop stuff they knew they'd never be able to finish in time (like dropping half of the intended plot stuff that was supposed to happen on Korriban).

Both KOTOR games are 10 bucks each on Steam right now. That's as cheap as they've ever been I think.

they are 99% standalone. you won't really miss much story-wise not playing 1.

KoToR is fantastic though, you should play it.
gameplay wise it would be better to play it before 2, because 2 improves on things

and they weren't even allowed to patch in what was missing.

play 2 w/o restored content first, then play with it.

You definitely should.

When both games in a series are readily available, theres no reason not to start at the beginning.

The first game is better, anyway. Much tighter plot, characters, and overall story.

Not much.

In both cases, the only major thing that's really changed is who you can romance (because there's no homosexuality in the Star Wars universe - that was actually an official mandate from LucasArts at the time). In KotOR2 it also changes which of two specific characters you can recruit (just like whether you're Light Side or Dark Side alters which of two other characters you get), but it's not a super-huge difference.

Also, it's worth noting that while LucasArts has said that the canon genders for PCs are male for KotOR1 and female for KotOR2, I think both games are pretty much better in every way if you reverse that (female in KotOR1, male in KotOR2).

KOTOR is fun even though it hasn't aged that well. I haven't played KOTOR 2 since it first came out, but I remember it being clearly inferior to the first, so I'd keep expectations low.

But yeah, play them in order of course.

Female can sex up Juhani and is the only way to kill Carth off Dark Side. Plus it makes Carth's redemptive arc way more meaningful.

Bastila romance would have been nice if you could have gone for the lesbian option, but male romance just sort of makes you feel like a bit of an aggressive creep, and makes it seem like her fall to the Dark Side is fueled by her desire for your dick, which is kind of less interesting than the female alternative.

Plus, Revan's relationship with Malak just works so much better on every possible level if you've got lady-parts than it does if you're just a dude. It also makes the revelation a bit more impactful, because the default assumption is sort of that Revan is a dude until - SURPRISE! - he's really a she. And it's kind of fun when you have the most brilliant military mind in the Republic be a woman.

Being a female also makes it a bit more appropriate when Jolee is talking to you about the Force, and brings up that you kind of remind him of Nomi Sunrider.
