Imagine not even including Persona 3 or 4 in the list, AND putting FFX as #1....I just can't, today...

Surprised to see Suikoden Tactics make a top 10 PS2 RPG list, but I enjoyed it a lot so...good.
And two of the top 10 are Suikoden titles, so that's awesome.

Really strange to put Suikoden Tactics and Suikoden III, but not Suikoden V, though. Most people would consider that the best PS2 Suikoden game.

I wouldn't put any Persona games on that list either. And FFX probably does belong as #1, at least out of those specific 10.

If anything, my biggest problem with that list is FFXII and Suikoden Tactics being on it at all, and the lack of .hack games. And maybe the lack of Kingdom Hearts.

EDIT: Oh, and putting Shadow Hearts on there and not Shadow Hearts: Covenant, when the second game is FAR better than the first one (though both are great).

And also this.

Suikoden V is either the best or the second best game in the entire franchise. While Tactics is easily the worst game in the franchise (even more so than IV).

Which would the other contender be?

No, Suikoden IV is the worst.

Tactics has the worst story, but the game play is superb. I like it even better than the obviously similar FF Tactics game play (but since FFT has a class system, it has a much deeper build/optimization system).
IV on the other hand is the 2nd worst story in the main Suikoden series (after Tactics), and also the worst game play.

Suikoden II.

But that's PS1, not PS2, so it wouldn't apply here.

If you're really interested in my thoughts on Suikoden, you can always read this:

I'd argue that the gameplay in Tactics is mediocre at best, and there are far better games with that style of play (you've already mentioned FFT, but there are others). I'd also argue that the gameplay in Suikoden IV is much better than you're implying.

But in terms of setting/characters/plot/overarching connections to the franchise, Tactics is worse in pretty much every possible way than IV. And IV is admittedly pretty bad. But Tactics is terrible.

Even if Tactics had the best gameplay ever for that genre, it wouldn't really matter if I hate everything else about the game so much that I have zero interest in completing chapters to see where the story is going. It feels completely pointless, in ways that series like Front Mission or Ogre Tactics don't.

I never went back and played Suikoden IV again after the first time, but in spite of finding it mostly meh I never had trouble finishing it. With Tactics, I've never been motivated to finish it even once.

I'd even rank Tactics behind Suikoden Tierkreis, and Tierkreis is also mostly shit.

tbh, despite its faults, KH1 was the only RPG to really get me interested in buying the system at that point and it's by far the most memorable one I played. (And, despite liking FF on the SNES and ps1 -- never played the NES one for whatever reason -- I still haven't touched X or X-2... or, come to think of it, *any* main numbered title after 9. (Although I've still played -- and enjoyed -- some of the spinoffs, including FFTA, FF Explorers, Chocobo Tales or whatever, etc.))

FFXII isn't even better than watching linoleum peel or paint dry.

Soul-numbing boredom and apathy is not a virtue.

And Balthier being cool doesn't really counterbalance the plot being stupid and Vaan being a massive tool.

Suikoden I

It's still a great game; takes only 20 hours to beat, maybe 25+ if you try to get all 108 stars of destiny on your first play through w/o a guide (good luck w/ that :) ); the story in Suikoden II is pretty much a direct sequel in the bordering lands w/ tons of returning characters; and if you have an end game Suikoden I save file to load when you start Suikoden II, you get a very nice bonus...
