Yeah, people really kind of abstained from giving out "extra" nominations this year in favor of scrambling to get their faves in, so it didn't take much to get a very high seed. We had a MASSIVE amount of shows at the three-nom spot, but ended up with some weird shows getting high seeds. Hell, Jackie Chan Adventures might've been a 1 seed if the guy who accidentally double nommed it twice hadn't been so honest.

A lot of the hate for DBZ has gone away, but it also isn't the hot show on the block anymore. The fervor over it on both sides has largely faded, replaced by nostalgia that keeps it an upper carder in the tournaments usually.

This is a hard match to call. Haruhi is one of the more popular anime series of the last ten years. Scooby Doo has the nostalgia factor but it's always been kind of a midcarder in these tournaments since it was never really super popular here. People remember it fondly but it's not on the same level as stuff like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry.

Speaking of Looney Tunes, the absolute beating that Outlaw Star gave Looney Tunes back in 2002 remains the most bizarre result in tournament history, IMO. Outlaw Star has never shown that kind of strength in subsequent tournaments (in 2003 it was given a 3 seed and got past two fairly weak shows before getting its ass kicked by Family Guy in what was supposed to be a really close matchup), and Looney Tunes has been reliably strong ever since (as soon as a couple years after that beatdown, Looney Tunes came very close to winning the whole tournament).

This, I believe, is the first tournament for Hulk Hogan's cartoon. As for Freakazoid, it's displayed decent strength in the past but I don't think it's ever been dominant. Might've made a sweet sixteen run once. It's a solid midcarder, borderline upper midcarder.

I don't like Black Dynamite's chances. It would be a massive upset if Bebop lost, considering that Bebop is a former champ and has been to the semifinals/elite eight many, many times.

Cowboy Bebop is expected to win its region and isn't likely to face a serious challenge until Batman unless one of either Bojack, Death Note, or Star goes on an absolute tear.

The Critic is a marginally popular cult classic that's put up decent matches against decent competition (the likes of FLCL). It's expected to lose against Korra but could put up a decent fight. If it beat Korra, it would probably have a decent shot against Gargoyles/Daria as well, but Bebop would probably be as far as it could go.

Spawn has a tough road ahead of it. Steven Universe has underperformed somewhat (it lost to Beavis and Butthead last year), but Spawn, like The Critic, is a cult classic and probably less people have seen it. It has the "badass factor" going for it but IIRC, Spawn has never won a match in this tournament before.

Mystery Incorporated is another show that's well liked but that doesn't translate into tournament performance. It MAY have gotten to the third round one year, but I don't remember. I know it's going up against a show that's performed very well in tournaments, both back in the 2000s and recently.

Lol Adventure Time went from almost missing the cut to getting a 2-seed?? lolol

Toughest 1st round match-ups for me:

1. Pokmon vs Recess - nope. I absolutely refuse to pick. Both shows are excellent for what they are, and were after-school favorites for me in the late 90's. Recess' clever writing might be the one thing that gives it the edge for me.
2. Ed, Edd n Eddy vs Amazing World of Gumball - brutal. both shows are near 10/10. I give Ed Edd n Eddy the slight edge for being a little more laid back and fun, but I might vote for Gumball because I know it's going to get crushed and it's very underrated. The humor's very smart and at a time when a lot of cartoons have the same look, it's very cool that they drew each character/family in its own unique art style.
3. Looney Tunes vs Mighty Max - all of Looney Tunes vs one of the great 90's action cartoons?? aye yi yi. I mean, Looney Tunes should win but it's tough to not go with Mighty Max here.
4. Jackie Chan Adventures vs Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy - these are both solid like 7 or 8/10 shows for me. I think I'd go with Billy and Mandy for the humor but Jackie Chan Adventures is not a bad action cartoon at all.
5. Space Ghost: Coast to Coast vs Magic School Bus - ugh, don't do this to me. I give Space Ghost the nod for really funny celebrity interactions and irreverence, but quality edutainment is hard to come by and should get extra consideration, I think.
6. Arthur/Reboot - I have great nostalgic fondness for Reboot but Arthur's much more polished and fleshed out, I think.
7. Over the Garden Wall/Johnny Bravo - I really like Johnny Bravo but OtGW is about as close to a perfect mini-series as you can get, animated or otherwise. Has great characters and humor while feeling very large in scope and deep emotionally. Absolute perfect watch for fall/Halloween.

I'd heard of Legend Of The Galactic Heroes and I've seen some fans before but I had no idea it was THAT popular.

And I've got to imagine Monster is considered the favorite in its match against Rick and Morty, considering it just handily beat Beavis and Butthead (which is one tournament removed from beating Kill la Kill and Steven Universe) and Rick and Morty almost choked against Your Lie In April. Monster is a former champion and it's showing shades of that level of strength in the first round.

Wasn't expecting Legend of the Galactic Heroes to win that one but glad it did!

It's popularity is pretty unique, as far as I'm aware; can't think of any other anime that were already old at the time they got fansubbed that then became well-known and semi-popular in mainstream anime circles through sheer word of mouth.

How have it and Stand Alone Complex done in previous contests?

I don't think Legend Of The Galactic Heroes has ever been in one of these contests.

Stand Alone Complex, IIRC, has only made it to the second round before. It seemed poised for a big run this year but that didn't happen!
