Well I just realized my childhood is separated into three generations (four if you count the late Gen Y systems much later). I'm gonna go with core Gen Y because I owned three of the four systems in that category and the N64 is was a part of many of my best childhood memories.

I was born mid/late 80's but got the NES when I was 3, so...

I am also confused as to why the Game Boy is not lumped in with the NES era.

This sectioned off listing is really particular.

Game Boy may've started in the NES era, but its popularity peaked moreso during the SNES era.

The premise of that list is kind of shit.

But my "childhood" in gaming was second gen (ColecoVision and Atari 2600) and third gen (NES). More specifically, I'd say I spent from around age 6 to age 12 with my Coleco/Atari, and 12-16 with the NES.

Fourth gen into fifth gen (PS1) was high school and college for me, with sixth gen (PS2/Xbox) starting just post-college.

Seventh gen (360) didn't really officially start for me until I was in my mid-30s. By eighth gen (PS4) I was almost 40.

Huh?

I was born in the late 70's, I've played every generation starting at core gen x.

I didn't pick a side. This is dumb.

Late Gen Y for sure, as my first and only console as a child was a PS2. I played games on PC though in addition to PS2. Only other consoles I have ever owned have been Xbox 360 and Wii.

It's sociology. These terms were popularized in the early 90s, way before Pokemon, heh.

My cousins had Atari, we had the Oddysey 2 so I played that most as a kid. I much preferred the arcades though because those games seemed more intuitvie than the Oddysey or Atari games.

Early Gen Y according to this image despite my first console actually being the commodore 64 and after that I got a NES and then Master system so that falls into the late gen X category. Although granted I didn't buy the NES and Master System on day one of course. It was around 1990 I started playing video games and I was 4 at the time.

I should technically be an early Gen Y, but I owned more late Gen X games (probably because I was poor and they were cheap). Makes sense since that appears to be the overlap for kids born in the early 80's (I was born in 83). By the time core Gen Y games were around, I was pretty much completely into PC gaming.

We had a Pong system when I was very young, but the system I remember most was the Atari 800 I got when I was about 12. It beat the absolute crap out of the 2600. Screw the Atari Flashback, I want an 800 Flashback.
