I've never beaten the NES TMNT game. I could get past the first dam level, but after some point I just got lost on the map and had no idea where to go, and the game is far too punishing to support exploring at random.

I love that game ,you probably kept getting stuck in the Bronx at the infamous jump the sewer ledge with a low roof and if you fall in your back at the beginning of the Bronx and like 30 minutes of difficult areas back. Part I always got fucked on too

It's almost like game rental places never had the manual. Not to mention, 99% of the time, you never needed to read the damn manual (unless it was a cool one like Zelda).

If out of the blue, your game suddenly requires a mechanic that is mentioned in the game manual after going through several levels where you didn't need it - that's just bad game design. Sega fucked up. Deal with it.

Not really.

Also what the fuck did you rent games that didn't include a manual?

Who knows. Maybe I grew up in a bubble.

Also, back in the day...you did need to read the manual.

100%ing this game without cheats is still one of my proudest gaming accomplishments. You're right, though. The levels are freaking huge, and the save points are few and far between. I remember going like 2-3 hours between some save points.

I actually dont know. I want to say games like Warcraft, Age of Empires and Starcraft because Id always cheat instead of playing them properly?

Now that I think about it, there was this RTS called Rising Lands that was so obtuse and weird to play that I couldnt get very far in it. There was also Creature Crunch, a point-and-click game where you have to right click your character to open the inventory to use items to progress, I didnt know how to do it until I looked in the F1 help

The Sonic 3 barrel things weren't that hard to figure out. If you jump on them they bounce a bit, indicating a level of interactivity. I remember thinking I had to time the jumps and then press down on the downward swing, and then later realized I could make them go up faster by holding up, making the jump unnecessary.

I could see it being harder if you hadn't played a lot of other platformers before then. But that sort of thing was pretty common in other games of the time.

I've finished this game tons of times but still occasionally get stuck on that part if it's been long enough that I forget about it. Also that long segment where you have to shoot the chandelier thing onto the guard below and do the roll to pick up the gun after another one choke-lifts you.

Hardest part of the whole game

It was tough until you realized there were instructions for it in the game booklet.

Though on that topic, the game had several absolutely brutal levels. The last level and that supid pickup truck one with the package, and one in New York that I don't remember exactly what it was, and the Superfly Drive, and the one where you chase the elested train, man that game just had no mercy at times.

When I was a kid, I didn't understand how the Sphere Grid worked in FFX, so I just didn't use it. I made it all the way to the first Seymour fight with base stats and abilities before giving up. I didn't finish it until years later.

This really cracked me up at first. Then I remembered FF8 and how I didn't bother with the draw system the entire game (except when required) and just grinded and got to the final boss through brute force. I couldn't beat her and ended up replaying the game the "right" way.

I eventually "beat" it like last year using a guide. I think my copy glitched out or something though. I couldn't get into the last area to "fight" the boss.
