I usually don't mind because other people have possibly touched it as well. As long as the food itself is clean, I'm fine...

Sometimes people have social anxiety too and they'd rather wait to do self checkout than to have to force small talk with the cashier. It makes it really uncomfortable.

If you have social anxiety, avoiding social interactions is the worst thing to do, if you want to overcome it. But I guess even going to the grocery store and doing your own shopping instead of having it delivered is also a good step forward.

But still, don't self checkout with a full cart.

Avoidance helps you not feel the anxiety but the seclusion also prevents you from overcoming it while strengthening it so when you must interact, it's unbearable.

Nothing to really argue considering I said exposure therapy is helpful to some folk. Quite a few folk put that into practice on the course I was on for anxiety. Also there is a book called "feel the fear but do it anyway". I've not read the book as it's not needed in my case but the title certainly applies to many forms of anxiety.

After using self checkout and observing others, the main problems lays in the fact that most grocery store patrons have never worked at a grocery store. There is also the issue of the weight system sensitivity and the coding regarding that.

If the machines are not reliable or effective for the general customers it's time for a more accessible redesign. You should not need to have worked in a field of work in order to use self service.

have to force small talk with the cashier

I guess it depends on the store. I know one store I go to where I talk to the cashiers all the time because I see them often and basically know them. I've also been to plenty or stores where nobody talks. I personally find it weird to not say anything, but I know some people prefer it that way. I guess they could always go to that store if they really are going to try to avoid people. That being said, Idc if they use the self checkout since that's less people in front of me...

I don't have a problem with self checkout. I have worked at Target, though. I just don't feel like scanning and bagging everything. Plus, it's much quicker to go through a regular line with a cashier.

It possible that the manned register is further away. And when you only have one item, it's probably much quicker at the self checkout. Though, for the people with the full cart, it would be much quicker to use the manned lane.

I'm not saying you're not fast or anything. But it would probably be faster with a manned register with a full cart because a cashier can start scanning stuff while you're putting stuff on the conveyor belt. So, I think with a full cart, it would be much faster with a cashier just because of multitasking. Not to mention, as soon as you're done stacking stuff on the belt, you can start taking the full bags... Where as you would be taking stuff out, scanning, and bagging by yourself otherwise. Now, with two people, it would be a little faster. And with three, maybe faster than the cashier. But I think it wouldn't be as fast if you were by yourself.
